US and UK blind veterans to take part in week-long exchange in Wales

Blind military veterans from the US will head to Wales to join national sight loss charity Blind Veterans UK for an exchange week beginning on Sunday (20/05).

Members of the US organisation the Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) will be visiting Britain through an exchange programme between the Association and Blind Veterans UK called Project Gemini.

Now in its eighth year, Project Gemini enables Blind Veterans UK and the BVA to share experiences and knowledge about matters such as blind rehabilitation and readjustment training, vision research and adaptive technology for the blind. This year the group will be based at the Blind Veterans UK training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.

Tyne and Wear veteran to take on the Fan Dance Race for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

A local Navy veteran is taking on the ultimate SAS selection challenge to raise money for the charities that have supported him after being diagnosed with PTSD.

John Mew, 60, from Dinnington in Newcastle is taking part in the gruelling 24km Fan Dance Race, which sees participants run over the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons, Pen Y Fen, not just once – but twice.

John served in the Royal Navy for 12 years as a physical training instructor, ships diver and as a member of the Portsmouth Command Field Gun Crew.

Walk Of America 2018: Meet UK Team Member, Kemsley.

Kemsley is one of the core UK team members taking part in the Walk Of America this year. He served with the Royal Signals for 15 years, a job he loved, but he is currently awaiting medical discharge. Kemsley struggles with repeated double shoulder dislocations which have severely impaired his physical and sporting abilities, and thus his ability to remain within the Army. He is passionate about helping and encouraging other ex-servicemen and women to come forward and seek support, and to shine the spotlight on those, who like him, feel that they aren’t injured ‘enough’ to warrant support.

Walk Of America 2018: Meet UK Team Member, Jonny.

Jonny, 28, is one of the core Walk Of America 2018 UK team members. He joined the Army to find a sense of identity, purpose and belonging. Jonny served with the Royal Anglian for 8 years but was medically discharged in 2016 due to a shoulder injury and mental health difficulties. He began sofa surfing immediately after leaving the forces as he had no home to go to, but he is currently a resident of The Beacon, a specialist veterans support centre which aids veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

This year The Royal British Legion is honoured to have been chosen as Charity of the Day and we’ll be celebrating the unique contribution of our Armed Forces community as One Legion – United by Difference.

Despite the differences between the Army and Navy so evident on match day, it is these differences that ultimately make us stronger when we stand together.

The Royal British Legion has been supporting soldiers, sailors and airmen past and present since 1921, and we’ll be here as long as they need us.

A group of injured veterans are preparing to take part in a series of epic outdoor performances this Summer to mark the centenary of the end of WWI. The piece, entitled This Is Not For You is a Graeae Theatre Production, co-commissioned by military charity Blesma, The Limbless Veterans and 14-18 NOW, supported by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (UK Branch), The Drive Project, National Centre for Circus Arts and Arts Council England.

This Is Not For You, part of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, is an epic outdoor performance paying moving tribute to Britain’s wounded war veterans, men and women whose contributions to history often go unnoticed.

Stoll’s Chief Executive continues preparing for the London Marathon

Stoll’s Chief Executive, Ed Tytherleigh, continues preparing for the London Marathon and we hear an update on how his training is going.

Last month I declared my intention to run the London Marathon on Sunday April 22nd. The attempt is very much on and training is in full swing!

Stoll opens a new housing scheme in Aldershot in May this year and I am running to try and raise £10,000 to support the development.

Party time as RAF veteran Oswald reaches 99

The oldest resident at Salford’s Broughton House care home for ex-servicemen and women has celebrated his 99th birthday.

Friends, present and former staff and supporters of Broughton House attended a party for Oswald Dixon, whose cake was decorated with an RAF flag, badges and model aeroplanes.

Oswald came from Jamaica to join the RAF as an engineer during the Second World War. He remained in the service until he retired, teaching new recruits.

Beer and Blues Festival Fundraiser at the Sloop Inn on Sunday 6 May 2018

The Sloop Inn, Sloop Lane, Scaynes Hill RH17 7NP is hosting a fundraising Beer and Blues Festival in aid of “Building Heroes”, a military charity in West Sussex providing a unique programme enabling military veterans to achieve a rapid transition into employment in construction.

The Beer & Blues Festival is being held on Sunday 6 May 2018(day before May day Bank Holiday Monday) from 2.00pm until 10pm.

Morale boost for troops on Op CABRIT

More than 600 British troops currently deployed on Op CABRIT in Estonia and Poland have just been treated to morale-boosting shows courtesy of The British Forces Foundation.

Singer Holly Ellison, one of the finds on this year’s series of the television programme The Voice UK, led the musical entertainment while comedians John Moloney and Kev Orkian provided the laughs.

The first of the shows was staged in Estonia and proved a massive hit with the 500 plus audience.
