Spinnaker Abseil Success

South West based charity Alabaré held a thrilling fundraiser on Sunday 25th March as 45 participant’s abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.

The event helped to raise over £12,000 for Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans service as those taking part descended over 100 metres down the side of the iconic harbour side landmark.

With each of those taking part pledging to raise a minimum of £200, the event helped to raise vital funds for veterans who are homelessness or those at risk of being so.

Stand Easy May 2018 drama projects

Stand Easy works with Wounded, Injured and Sick Veterans to help their recovery through drama activities. We are based in Dundee but take Veterans from throughout Scotland. We run weekly drama/social workshops but we also run one 4 week drama project in May each year.

This year the project starts on May 7th and it will end with a short tour of Tayside Community Venues. The play will be devised by the Veterans together with a staff of professionals and also volunteer drama students. It will focus on family life in the military and after transition.

Vacancy – John Cornwell VC National Memorial Almshouse

The Trustees of the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust invite applications to become a resident of the John Cornwell VC National Memorial Almshouse.

Eligibility is open to all needy disabled and/or infirm former sailors and Royal Marines up to and including the rate or rank of Warrant Officer, and their families. The almshouse facilities are not suitable for residents with a severe disability due to the design and construction of the buildings, which consists of a community of six cottage homes in Hornchurch, Essex.

The Royal British Legion have expanded their South Wales Admiral Nurse service into Gwent

The service, which offers specialist support, information and advice to the carers of people with dementia was developed in partnership with Dementia UK. Since launching its first Admiral Nurse service in West Midlands in 2012 the Legion has become the biggest employer of Admiral Nurses in the UK.

Having launched in south Wales in September 2018 with two nurses covering the area Neath to Cardiff, the team has already doubled in size to 4, which has allowed the service to be expanded to cover Gwent.

Army V Navy Match Ball Will Go To Gallipoli Ahead of the Big Game

A team of UK Armed Forces Personnel are walking 30km as part of a commemorative tour around the battlefield sites of Gallipoli accompanied by the match ball that will be used in this year’s Army Navy Rugby Match.

Led by the Royal Navy’s Lt Cdr Doc Cox, the team includes British Army colleagues WO2 Adam Finch, Capt Hugo Engelbrecht and Sgt Sid Ney and they will be supported on the day by Capt Roly Jackson. The team will set off at sunrise on Sunday 22nd April from V Beach taking in poignant sites across the region where 58,000 allied soldiers – including 29,000 British and Irish soldiers and 11,000 Australians and New Zealanders – lost their lives.

Salonika Reflections

South West based charity Alabaré were amongst those who were invited to attend the launch of ‘Salonika Reflections’, an exhibition of art developed by service users from Alabaré’s Wiltshire Home for Veterans, curated by the artist Susan Francis.

In a series of creative workshops, our veterans studied photos and records from soldiers who served in the Salonika campaign in the First World War. They related these to their own personal experiences from their time spent in the military, creating an exhibition which crosses the boundaries of time.

Carers need not feel alone – the RAF Benevolent Fund is by their side

Carers who are part of the RAF Family now have a dedicated support package – thanks to the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The RAF’s leading welfare charity has launched the new service to reach out to unpaid carers who are looking after loved ones and may not realise that help is out there.

The package aims to provide respite, financial and practical support and includes the introduction of new welfare initiatives.

A lasting legacy – a major appeal launched as part of RAF100

A major fundraising appeal has been launched by the Royal Air Force and its four main charities as part of the Royal Air Force’s centenary.

2018 marks the centenary of the Royal Air Force, and to celebrate there are a number of events taking place across the country, and abroad. Events include a touring display of aircraft from the past century in cities nationwide to a mass flypast in London, 100-day baton relay and the unveiling of new galleries at the RAF Museum.

Explorer Levison Wood delivers inspiring speech to military veterans at Combat Stress centre

Bestselling author, explorer and photographer Levison Wood, visited the UK’s leading charity for veterans mental health on Wednesday to talk to former servicemen and women about his career as an officer in the Parachute Regiment and his transition to becoming an explorer.

While at Audley Court, the Combat Stress centre in Newport, Shropshire, Levison was taken on a tour to see how the charity supports veterans with mental health conditions. The services provided at the centre include occupational therapy workshops, which help veterans improve their physical health and wellbeing, relationships, behaviour, beliefs, emotions and thinking. This enables veterans to become more resilient and cope better with their condition.
