The team was trained and selected by Help for Heroes to represent the UK at the 2018 Warrior Games from 1 – 9 June in Colorado Springs and they took part in nine adaptive sports: Athletics, Archery, Cycling, Indoor Rowing, Sitting Volleyball, Shooting, Swimming, Powerlifting and Wheelchair Basketball.
Competitor Ian Primmer served in the Royal Logistic Corps and suffers from PTSD and hip pain. Ian, who competed in cycling, swimming, and shooting.

The first official gathering of the 72-strong team of wounded, injured and sick (WIS) serving military personnel and Veterans took place early this morning at Horse Guards Parade in London.
Help for Heroes is responsible for training, selecting and developing the UK team and this year saw record numbers of hopefuls apply to be on the UK team. The team is comprised of 13 Serving members of the Armed Forces and 59 Veterans. 64% of those selected are new to the Invictus Games.

The military charity and conservation charity have been working together for several years. Over the last six months a new project has seen Help for Heroes veterans, their families and volunteers coppicing hazels from Essex Wildlife Trust land. They have then been taught the new skill of weaving hazel hurdle fences which are being installed into the ‘Hope on the Horizon’ garden at Colchester Recovery Centre on Wednesday.

The meeting comes a week before Help for Heroes appears before the Defence Select Committee, alongside other charity partners, as part of its inquiry into the mental health of Veterans and Serving Personnel. In written evidence to the Committee, the Charity raised concerns about MOD data collection in relation to mental health, as well as concerns with the MOD model of care which only allows for 6 months of treatment through the Departments of Community Mental Health (DCMH) before responsibility for care is passed to the NHS.

Their garden, The Force for Good, will tell the powerful story of the role horticulture plays in the recovery and ongoing support of injured British Armed Forces personnel and their families. Individual stories are told through the three elements of the garden as the team of college and former-military gardeners inform visitors of the journey from injury or illness through to recovery and beyond. The Force for Good garden is a demonstration of how horticulture has given these individuals a second chance at life and how everyone can benefit from its therapeutic benefits.
Read moreMilitary charity Help for Heroes is providing a grant of £246,000 to Stoll, the leading provider of supported housing to Veterans, to enable more wounded, injured and sick veterans living in London to rebuild their lives and empower them to make a positive impact in society.
The three-year partnership will enable two Stoll members of staff to act as the operational arm of Help for Heroes and provide outreach services to wounded, injured and sick veterans. Help for Heroes currently run four Recovery Centres across the UK; Tedworth House in Wiltshire, Chavasse House VC in Colchester, Phoenix House in Catterick and The Naval Service Recovery Centre at HMS Drake, Plymouth.
