Prince Harry opens 89th Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey 70,000 Remembrance Symbols planted by The Poppy Factory 

Prince Harry will open the 89th Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey, to remember those in the Armed Forces who have lost their lives, on Thursday 9th November at 11.00 am.

Organised and run by The Poppy Factory every year, the Field will have 380 plots laid out in the names of military organisations and associations on the North Green of the Abbey. Remembrance symbols, made by veterans working at the factory in Richmond, are planted in these plots, often with hand written messages, from family, friends or colleagues.

Lancashire blind veteran to march at Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday

A blind veteran from Lancashire is set to march at the Cenotaph in London this Remembrance Sunday (12/11) with the charity Blind Veterans UK.

Graham Ward, 59 and from Fleetwood, is being supported to do this by Specsavers. Specsavers stores across the country will be raising money from 6 to 12 November to help send blind veterans, including Graham, to march.

Graham will be marching at the Cenotaph in London with more than 100 other blind veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

The Royal Tank Regiment, the oldest tank unit in the world, will commemorate 100 years since the Battle of Cambrai

In late November the Royal Tank Regiment will mark 100 years since the first large scale tank action with special events taking place in London and Cambrai in Northern France. The Battle of Cambrai in 1917 changed the history of warfare forever with the first large-scale use of tanks in battle.

The Royal Tank Regiment, started out as a top secret band of trades from all walks of life, who were brought together in the Tank Corps to break the stalemate of trench warfare. They soon evolved into a unit which revolutionised combat and has deployed on all major conflicts over the last 100 years.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers aims to raise community spirit with new appointment

Scotty’s Little Soldiers, the charity dedicated to supporting bereaved Forces children, has appointed a new Fundraising Manager who will champion volunteering and community fundraising for the charity across the UK.

Tammy Green, who joins the charity as Community Fundraising Manager, will be heavily focused on creating Volunteer Fundraising Groups across the country together with recruiting volunteers to help with a range of support roles within the charity.

Tammy, who has over 15 years’ experience within the charity sector, is keen to speak to people across the country who would be willing to help support a worthy cause, which depends heavily on its volunteers.

Supporting Wounded Veterans’ Pain Management Programme

Supporting Wounded Veterans’ Pain Management Programme run at, and in conjunction with, King Edward’s VII’s hospital, has now completed its first year of residential programmes. It is going from strength to strength, with on average 130 applications for every 10 places. We have also opened a Pain Clinic, where Veterans can come not only for advice on how to manage their pain, but also have a medication review.

HRH Princess Royal celebrates the WRNS at service of thanksgiving

HRH The Princess Royal has attended a service of thanksgiving at Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral to mark the formation of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) 100 years ago.

Princess Anne is also the Chief Commandant for Women in the Royal Navy and will be unveiling a commemorative stone after the service in the Cathedral grounds.

The commemorative stone depicts the unique shapes of four female naval uniform hats from the past 100 years.

As the nation pauses to reflect on the lives sacrificed in conflict this Armistice Day, it is important to remember the many brave women who have fought to defend our nation. The Royal Star & Garter Homes provides specialist care to many ex-service women, all with inspiring stories. Here we share one resident’s wartime experience.

Joan was 15 when the Second World War was declared. Desperate to play her part in the war effort, Joan fibbed about her age, declaring she was 16, so she could join the Air Raid Precautions (ARP).

Leeds blind veteran to march at Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday

A blind veteran from Leeds is set to march at the Cenotaph in London this Remembrance Sunday (12/11) with the charity Blind Veterans UK.

Simon Brown, 38, is being supported to do this by his local Specsavers store in Selby. The store will be raising money from 6 to 12 November to help send blind veterans, including Simon, to march.

Simon will be marching at the Cenotaph in London with more than 100 other blind veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women. Simon’s guide, Tim White, is a fellow ex-Serviceman, and also from Yorkshire.
