Lieutenant General Sir Gary Coward appointed as Chairman of SSAFA

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, announces Lieutenant General Sir Gary Coward KBE CB as newly appointed Chairman of Council.

Sir Gary was initially commissioned into the Royal Artillery, serving in Germany and Northern Ireland. He trained as a pilot in 1978 serving in Germany, Hong Kong, Brunei and the UK, transferring to the Army Air Corps in 1983. As a Staff Officer, he has held posts on the British Army Staff in Washington, the Directorate of Army Aviation, the UN Protection Force in Sarajevo and the Chiefs of Staff Secretariat in the MOD. He commanded C Flight AAC in Brunei, 656 Squadron AAC in the UK and 1 Regiment AAC in Germany and the Balkans.

Families in Scotland encouraged to share their posting experience with AFF

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is calling on Army families in Scotland to take part in their latest survey to help inform them about the issues families face and any unique circumstances a Scottish posting poses.

Families’ feedback will help to shape the charity’s upcoming Scotland roadshow, which takes place on 23 March in Kinloss.

The UK’s biggest grocery retailer, Tesco, has launched a recruitment drive aimed at former military personnel, supported by the OA and Tesco’s own Armed Forces Network.

New Forces in Mind Trust award: King’s College London to compare the mental health and treatment needs of UK veterans with those of the general population

A grant of £157,384 has been awarded to King’s College London (KCL), in partnership with the University of Liverpool, to evaluate whether the mental health and treatment needs of UK veterans, and their treatment outcomes, differ from those of the general population.

Seafarers UK donates £19,000 to disabled Naval Veterans at QAHH

A charity that helps people in the maritime community has donated £19,000 to The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) in Worthing, which provides care and rehabilitation to ex-Servicemen and women.

Seafarers UK has donated the money towards physiotherapy for the former seafaring residents who live at QAHH. This donation will help these veterans to increase their mobility and independence throughout 2017.

New Mortgages Deal

Armed Forces personnel redeployed within the UK will now be able to rent out their homes without facing higher costs or having to change their mortgage.

This commitment from the majority of the UK’s high street banks and building societies is an extension to the offer made back in January 2016, which allowed service personnel posted overseas to rent out their homes at no extra cost.

Service Pupil Premium- Guide

The Department for Education introduced the Service Pupil Premium in April 2011 in recognition of the specific and unique challenges children from Service families face.

The Ministry of Defence has now produced a booklet showing a selection of effective, creative and innovative ways in which both primary and secondary schools have used the available funding to support Service children.
