New support hub aims to help veterans as they transition into civillian life

Broughton House has launched an Armed Forces Support Hub to help ex-servicemen and women transition successfully to civilian life.

The Hub is expected to be up and running by the end of the year and will be a one-stop shop offering help to veterans with health, welfare, housing, social and employment issues.

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, attended the launch and pledged £5,000 to the Hub from his Homelessness Fund.

His fund is supporting efforts to prevent veteran homelessness, and at the launch he said it was unacceptable that those who have served the country were sleeping rough.

HighGround Charity need to raise £90,000 to support veterans into employment

Individuals and businesses from across the South West met this Wednesday for an evening of fundraising to support training and opportunities for returning servicemen and women.

The fundraiser, held at Bicton College in East Budleigh, was aimed at raising awareness and vital funds for HighGround, a charity who provide jobs, careers and vocational opportunities for Service Leavers, Reservists and Veterans in the land-based sector.

Hosted by Bicton College, HighGround runs a series of Rural Weeks throughout the year which provide candidates with seminars and tasters of Rural Careers. HighGround plan to deliver 8 Rural Weeks during 2018 that will support over 80 individuals.

Stars Rally for Veteran Employment

Joanna Lumley, Ray Winstone and Richard Wilson are some of the celebrities starring in three short films promoting military veteran employment.

The celebrities highlight the skills veterans can bring to employers, and some of the barriers that need to be overcome for them to secure new fulfilling careers when they leave the military. Other celebrity appearances include Claire Balding, Hugh Bonneville, ‘Judge’ Rob Rinder, Larry Lamb, Matt Barber, Nick Knowles, Paul Copley. Some of the biggest veteran employers in the UK are also involved, such as BT, Alexander Mann Solutions, Deloitte, Jaguar Land Rover as well as veterans themselves.

Being an intern can help you gain vital work experience and industry insight.

Lisa Jones, an OA Career Consultant, recently ran a webinar with Charlie Perkins and Guy Amir from Goldman Sachs to discuss its Veterans’ Integration Programme. Lisa Jones served in the Army, and then worked in the City before joining the OA. Both Charlie and Guy served in the Army and then joined the Goldman Sachs Veterans’ Integration Programme. As a consequence of the internship they secured full time permanent roles at the multinational Investment Bank.

RFEA partners with See Potential campaign

RFEA is pleased to partner with the Government’s See Potential campaign, focused on their Employing Military Veterans event this month which was introduced by Caroline Dineage, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions.

See Potential aims to help businesses fill skills gaps and diversify workforces by hiring people from disadvantaged groups including some military veterans. Sir Richard Branson, Deborah Meaden and Simon Cowell are See Potential ambassadors.

The Employing Military Veterans event was targeted at employers who do not currently recruit ex forces and showcased some of the employers who work closely with RFEA, demonstrating the value that they place on military experience within their workforce and how they operate their ex military recruitment.

Heropreneurs has teamed up with Google to offer attendees an Introduction to Digital Advertising: You will learn how to set up online advertising campaigns, while increasing your business’s visibility and engagement with customers across digital and social platforms.

The OA Employment Symposium in London is the ‘must attend event’ for officers looking to get a head start in their next career after leaving the Services. Bringing together serving and former officers, key employers and industry experts , the day involves breakout sessions and talks, covering industry insights and career advice.
