New Chairman of Help 4 Homeless Veterans

Doncaster Councillor John Healy (Labour Balby South) a former social housing manager in North Lincolnshire prior to retirement recently took over Chairmanship of Help 4 Homeless Veterans a local charity that supports former members of HM Forces in need of emergency housing. John has served on the committee since November 2015 and was voted as Chair at the recent AGM of the trustees.

Updates from the Forces Welfare Media Team

The Forces Welfare Media Team has been in the South West, finding out how the RFEA has helped a former Royal Marine into a rewarding civilian job with a demolition firm in Plymouth.

They’ve also filmed with two charities that have been helped by grants from the Royal British Legion. The team joined veterans and servicemen and women leaving the forces as they learned building and decorating skills with Building Heroes and braved chilly Cornish waters for a day at the beach with Surf Action and a group of forces families.

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is to host a Research Symposium on Monday 5 June, following the success of their first symposium back in 2015.

The event, a collaboration between academics, subject matter experts, AFF and the MOD, will focus on the issues Army families face with the aim of further research being developed and a better understanding of this cohort.

The independent charity, which was originally founded in 1943 as a rehabilitation and resettlement centre for service personnel returning from active service, provides health, training and employment opportunities for people excluded and isolated due to multiple disadvantages.

Since its inception as the Federation of Army Wives Clubs back in 1982, AFF has evolved into a worldwide charity, working on behalf of all Army families – Regular and Reserve, wherever they are based, whatever their family make-up.

Supporting the family of a WWII pilot

When Deborah and her husband were worrying with the stress of her mum’s care home fees, they turned to the RAF Association for support.

Deborah’s dad was a pilot during WWII, staying in the air force for eight years. He met Deborah’s mum, Pat after leaving the Air Force and they were happily married for many years until he passed away, leaving Pat alone. Nowadays, Pat is sadly living with mixed dementia, she has had Alzheimer’s disease for many years, but when a stroke left her struggling with mobility, she was further diagnosed with vascular dementia.
