ABF The Soldiers’ Charity Awards £140,000 to Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans England and Wales

Veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless will benefit from a new grant of £140,000. The grant, awarded to Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans by ABF The Soldiers’ Charity will benefit the charity’s Welsh Homes for Veterans who will receive £50,000 of the grant, and £90,000 will be used by England Homes for Veterans to provide supported accommodation and support for those Veterans in need.

Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans offer support to service men and women across the UK who have left active service and who are experiencing difficulty adapting to civilian life. These former service personnel are homeless or at risk of being homeless, usually due to a lack of support network and social isolation after discharge.

New £4m RBLI apartments, specifically designed for veterans, opened by Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon

The Secretary of State for Defence, Sir Michael Fallon, has today opened Royal British Legion Industries’ new £4m apartments for injured veterans. The apartments, which were funded by the Government through The Libor Fund and four corporate donors, including the Morrisons Foundation, were officially opened at a grand event on Friday with over 250 attendees.

Situated on Hermitage Lane near Maidstone, the apartments have been built specifically for veterans who are wounded, injured, sick, or at risk of homelessness. The houses host 24 one and two-bed flats, all with special adaptations to make the lives of those with disabilities easier.

Convicts find Contentment! Documentary/Discussion at Stoll Veterans Centre

Opening of the RBLI Invictus and Victory Houses

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon gave a speech and officially opened Victory and Invictus Games Houses built by the Royal British Legion Industries.

It’s a huge pleasure to be here today to open these magnificent new apartments and meet their future occupants who I look forward to chatting to in a few minute’s time.

I remember standing across the road from here three years ago not long after I’d been appointed Defence Secretary. Back then there was nothing but a barren patch of land and set of ambitious plans.

Churchill’s grandson to give lecture on the life of Sir Winston

The life of former Prime Minister and war time leader, Sir Winston Churchill, is the subject of a fascinating lecture being hosted by Stoll, the leading provider of supported housing for Veterans. Sir Winston’s grandson, The Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames MP, will give the lecture at the Churchill War Rooms in London on 12 October at 7.30pm.

Veterans’ breakfast club has positive impact in Glasgow.

In May 2017, a breakfast club pilot was launched in Glasgow with the aim to bring together veterans in transitional and permanent accommodation. The idea stemmed from wanting to improve engagement and lessen veteran isolation within the community.

Scottish Veterans Residences (SVR) began the 6 month pilot at Bellrock Close residences in Glasgow with the hope to develop peer-to-peer support. The residence is home to 31 beneficiaries who require transitional support, and 21 permanent beneficiaries in affordable two-bedroom flats. The central block provides ex-servicemen and women with a specialised services and support facility – it’s here that the breakfast club meets in the café.

Over 4,000 people set Longleat aglow for Alabaré

Last Saturday (9th September) an astonishing 4,000 participants gathered in the iconic grounds of the Longleat Estate to take part in Glow in the Park:Longleat, the 6km UV family fun run.

The wet weather did not dampen the spirits and the crowd and atmosphere were buzzing with excitement. Families, running groups, groups of friends, individuals were swept around the course to 80s and 90s tunes. Disco The grounds were awash with neon sweatbands, face paints, neon tutus and smiles.

The course wound its way round the spectacular estate finishing in front of Longleat House and featured seven fun zones, including The Fluorescent Paint Blast, Squelchy Foam Zone, and for brave hearted runners The Lion’s Den!

Veterans’ Health & Wellbeing in Scotland – Are We Getting it Right?

Here is an excerpt from the Executive summary of a short ‘think piece’ by the Scottish Veterans Commissioner on key health issues for the veterans community. No recommendations contained but early conclusions on key issues:
The vast majority of veterans in Scotland are in relatively good health and lead happy and productive lives.
On those occasions when they need access to health or social care services, they rarely report obvious disadvantage when compared to the non-veterans population and are content with the support they receive.
