Going platinum: WWII blind veteran celebrates 70th wedding anniversary this Valentine’s Day

An Aldershot blind veteran, who has been supported by Blind Veterans UK since losing his sight, will celebrate his 70th wedding anniversary this Valentine’s Day. Lewis Trinder, 93, married his wife Vera, 90, on 14 February 1948.

Lewis says: “We met when we were both quite young, but I always knew I wanted to marry her. Our relationship survived the war and our marriage has survived seventy years, so we must be doing something right!”

The couple met when they were teenagers living in Haywards Heath. Soon after Lewis was deployed overseas.

“Spend time with your loved ones, while you still can”

Thanks to a generous donation from the Hotel Savoia and Jolanda, three families had the chance to enjoy a respite break in the stunning city of Venice, Italy. They even took the time to talk with us about their experiences.

The families had different backgrounds, but all were in need of quality time away to reconnect as a family unit. James, 10, said this “was the best holiday of his life” and couldn’t wait to tell his friends at school all about it. His parents are both serving in the RAF and it is difficult for him to spend time apart from them, saying what he misses the most when they are away is cuddles.

HRH Princess Alexandra visits veterans at The Royal Star & Garter Homes

Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra visited the disabled veterans living at The Royal Star & Garter Homes, Surbiton, to mark the Charity’s 102nd anniversary. The Princess was received by the Charity’s Chairman, Major General Tim Tyler, Chief Executive, Andy Cole, Director of Care, Pauline Shaw, and Surbiton Home Manager, Barbara Carter.

Her Royal Highness was welcomed by Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) veteran Phyllis and presented with a beautiful yellow posy. Phyllis commented, “The Princess was absolutely delightful. She asked about my time in the WAAF and we chatted for a long time about all sorts of things. I will always remember today with great fondness and happiness.”

Isle of Man Post Office introduces stamps to mark RAF100

As a tribute to all who have served in the Royal Air Force in the last century, Isle of Man Post Office has commissioned a set of eight commemorative stamps.

The stamps are officially licensed by the Ministry of Defence, highlighting the rich history and legacy of the RAF – the world’s first independent air force, founded on 1 April, 2018.

A unique feature of this stamp collection is the incredible depth of information that each stamp contains in relation to the RAF history.

Fundraiser follows in the footsteps of his prisoner of war Grandfather to raise money for Combat Stress

A fundraiser from Stoke-on-Trent will be following in the footsteps of his grandfather, by cycling the 760 mile route the prisoner of war took during the Second World War. On 21 February 2018 Martin Palmer and his father Stephen Palmer will start their journey from Poland to Germany to raise funds for Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health.

“My Grandfather didn’t really speak about World War II, I knew he was a prisoner of war, but it wasn’t until I started researching that I found out what he went through.

Three military charities come together to relaunch late Army surgeon’s fundraiser for injured veterans

Three military charities are coming together to relaunch the D-Day 44 Challenge, an event first run by Lt Col Mike McErlain, a serving Army surgeon who changed the lives of many injured service personnel for the better.

Mike, his wife Jo and his brother-in-law Giles Barnes set up the run in 2009 but tragically Mike collapsed and died while doing the run himself in 2013. Now with Jo’s blessing the event returns in 2018, the 74th anniversary of the D-Day landings, to continue its important fundraising work, with the three chosen charities being Blesma, The Limbless Veterans, Blind Veterans UK and Combat Stress.

On 10th January 2018, we announced our 43 amazing Finalists for the 2018 Soldiering On Awards from all areas of the UK and all walks of life. Each Finalist will be represented at a special Finalists reception at the House of Lords and will go forward to the Awards Night on the 20th April.
The 2018 Awards include three new Business Award categories in partnership with X-Forces, recognising the exceptional accomplishments of former members of the armed forces in the business community.
