What is Sapper Support?

Tim Evers, CEO of Sapper Support, one of our newest members, tells us about the charity and their plans for the future:

“Sapper support came into being after I learned that a friend of mine had taken his own life. He had unbeknown to us, been suffering from PTSD for some time, but as is the way, he kept it to himself. I was upset that he failed to, or thought he couldn’t, approach his friends for help. So, I looked into what help was available. The big charities were all well-established, but there seemed to be something missing….an oversight. There was no 24/7 helpline staffed solely by veterans.

Soldiering On Awards announce Finalists for 2018 Awards

10th January 2018 sees the announcement of 43 amazing Finalists for the 2018 Soldiering On Awards from all areas of the UK and all walks of life. All will go forward to Awards Night on the 20th April.

A New Year challenge to make a difference to the Armed Forces family

Sign up to the Midlands 30:30 challenge on 17th February for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, helping those in need

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is shouting out to the local community to sign up for an exhilarating challenge for 2018 – Midlands 30:30. Consisting of a 30 mile or 30 km trek across the beautiful Uttoxeter countryside whilst wearing 30lb backpacks, teams of four will compete to cross the finishing line.

This year, there is also an adjusted 14:18 route for teams wishing to take on a less daunting challenge, where trekkers will cover 14km carrying 18lb packs.

The Legion invites the Nation to say ‘thank you’

To mark the final year of the World War One centenary, The Royal British Legion is inviting the public to take part in a movement to say ‘Thank You’ to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.

The charity is calling on the nation to remember not only the 1.2 million British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who lost their lives, but also those – military and civilian – who played their part on the home front and those who returned to build a better life for the benefit of generations to come.

Deptherapy and Divecrew Grant Scuba Diver’s Last Wish this Christmas

A team from scuba diving rehabilitation charity, Deptherapy, and PADI 5* dive centre Divecrew, have made a scuba diver’s wish for one, last dive come true this Christmas.

Colin Clements, 60, from Woodley, Berkshire, is suffering from an aggressive form of brain cancer that will take his life in the near future. Knowing he would be unable to dive again, Colin donated his diving equipment to Deptherapy so that other divers could be helped by his loss.

When contacting Colin to offer his thanks for this brave and selfless gesture, Richard Cullen, Deptherapy Chairman, was made aware that Colin had a dying wish to undertake one, last dive.

Army blind veteran to receive well-deserved break this Christmas thanks to national military charity

Bill Hewson, 91 and from Kingston upon Thames, will spend the festive period with other vision-impaired ex-Service men and women at Blind Veterans UK’s Brighton centre for the third time. Every year the charity invites beneficiaries who are in need of respite, like Bill, to spend the week at one of the charity’s training and rehabilitation centres.

Bill says: “I’ll be spending Christmas at the centre with my wife Rita. We’ve been married for 65 years and I love her very much but now that she has dementia I’m both her husband and her carer.

Charity and Dive Centre to Grant Scuba Diver’s Last Wish this Christmas

Deptherapy, the charity that seeks to rehabilitate UK Armed Service personnel who have suffered life changing mental and/or physical challenges, and Crowthorne’s PADI 5* dive centre Divecrew, are teaming up to grant a scuba diver his last wish this Christmas.

When Colin Clements and his friend Daphne Pearson walked into Crowthorne-based PADI dive centre Divecrew, no one expected what was to happen next.

SSAFA WWII Veterans walk the red carpet at Darkest Hour film premiere

Damaris Media and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity join forces for ‘Darkest Hour’

Damaris Media and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, have partnered on the release of Darkest Hour (in cinemas 12th January). To celebrate, two of SSAFA’s WWII veterans were given the red carpet treatment at the premiere on 11 December before watching the film. Both veterans attend the SSAFA Southend Veteran’s Club, which runs every Thursday.
