Legion care home breaks world record with human poppy

Royal British Legion care home, Galanos House, has beaten a current Guinness World Record by creating the world’s largest human flower, forming the shape of the Legion poppy of course!

Located in South Warwickshire, Galanos House has celebrated its 50th anniversary by inviting its residents, staff, volunteers, families and the local community to be part of history by creating a giant human poppy.

Participants included local schools, Legion branches, the Women’s Institute, the Scouting movement and many others, came together at the Southam College to beat the current record of 2297 participants.

Commemorative Somme Poppy Run

Once again, a group of King’s Lynn park runners made the pilgrimage to the Somme area of France to commemorate the infamous Battle of the Somme by running the length of the Northern front line in aid of the Royal British Legion. The run was organised by Gary Walker, Secretary of the Sedgeford and District Branch who is also a Run Director for the King’s Lynn parkrun, whose members he canvassed to join him.

The Royal British Legion commemorates the Battle of Passchendaele

To commemorate the WWI Battle of Passchendaele (also known as the Third Battle of Ypres), the Royal British Legion has partnered with historian Dan Snow to create a series of unique and immersive virtual reality videos, from the experiences of those on the front line to nurses battling to treat the flood of casualties.

On Tuesday 25th July The Royal British Legion will be taking over the Household Cavalry Museum in Whitehall, alongside Dan Snow to launch the content.

Dunkirk the movie partners with Contact

Dunkirk opens as 400,000 British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. George Wagner was one of those young men and after decades of burying the memory of his experience, he opened up to Gemma Morgan (Former Army Captain, Kosovo) and Louis Nethercott (Former Royal Marine Commando, Afghanistan) in the Contact short Film Dunkirk Today.

Alongside Warner Brothers, Contact has produced the short film Dunkirk Today which highlights the similarities and differences across the past 77 years of conflict.

Wimbledon Tennis Championships

Each year, The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club very generously give The Not Forgotten Association tickets for Centre Court and No.1 Court throughout the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. This year was another resounding success, with 146 beneficiaries – of all ages and from all conflicts – and their escorts enjoying world-class tennis from premier seats and a delicious afternoon tea at the Wingfield Restaurant. As ever we extend a huge thank you to the AETLC for allowing the NFA this huge privilege.

Alpine Canoeing in the french Alps – 4 – 9th July & 9th – 14th July

Thanks to funding from Helps for Heroes, we were once again able to take two groups to the French Alps for the most exhilarating trip in our calendar of events – white water canoeing. Based in Vallouise these trips embrace the NFA ethos of “Comradeship to Challenge” and embody all that is great about the NFA; mixing veterans from the Falklands, Gulf War 91 and Northern Ireland with those from more recent conflicts, and bringing those suffering from PTSD, amputees and others with a variety of injuries – including some still serving but undergoing rehabilitation – together as a team.

Soldiering On Awards hold 2018 launch at MoD and announce X-Forces Partnership

Soldiering On Awards are delighted to announce the launch of the 2018 Awards – which this year will include 3 exciting new business categories in partnership with X-Forces. The official launch took place at a recent reception held at MoD Main Building, Whitehall. It was sponsored by Thales UK and had Awards Patron the Rt Hon Earl Howe PC, Deputy Leader of the House of Lords and Minister of State for Defence in attendance.

QAHH Summer Fayre raises over £5,500 for disabled veterans

On Saturday 8 July, The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) opened its doors for its annual Summer Fayre. The event raised a total of £5,575 for the charity!

The Summer Fayre is held to raise money for the Worthing-based Hospital Home, which cares for disabled ex-Servicemen and women. QAHH strives to improve the mobility and independence of its residents through rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social and recreation activities.

Visitors browsed the various market and craft stalls, took part in tombolas and raffles, and were treated to performances by dance troupes and military band, The Band of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment.

Dunkirk Veteran breaks 77-Year silience

The World Premiere of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk in Leicester Square tomorrow night (13 July), will be attended by George Wagner alongside HRH Prince Henry of Wales and two Veterans of Kosovo and Afghanistan.

George Wagner, of Lichfield, escaped the beaches of Dunkirk in a rowing boat aged 19. While he helped fellow soldiers to reach rescue boats by building piers out of trucks with his regiment the Royal Engineers, many of the ‘blokes’ in his unit didn’t make it home. He says it was ‘pot luck’ that he managed to escape relentless attacks from the air and the ground with little or no shelter on an open beach.

Blind veteran from Wrexham receives prestigious medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A blind veteran from Wrexham has been formally presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

Eric Andrews, 92, was presented with the prestigious honour in Llandudno, North Wales by French Honorary Consul, Mrs Aude Auclair. The ceremony was arranged and organised by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, from whom Eric receives support.
