Red, White & Blue Day 2017

Last Friday, 6th October, marked the Charity’s annual Red, White & Blue day in schools. The annual fundraising initiative, which raises vital funds for ourselves, The RAF Benevolent Fund and The Royal Navy, and Royal Marines Charity, helps us to promote awareness of the difficulties faced by Service families.

Former Wrens and Naval Servicewomen celebrate WRNS100 in Portsmouth

Naval Servicewomen and generations of former Wrens who served in support of the Royal Navy across the century gathered in HM Naval Base, Portsmouth at the end of September to celebrate 100 years since the Women’s Royal Naval Service commissioned in November 1917, during the First World War.

On Friday 29th September HMS Duncan, the sixth T45 class Air Defence Destroyer hosted an early evening reception for nearly 50 veterans and currently-serving women sailors.

Commander Eleanor Stack RN, HMS Duncan’s Commanding Officer and Captain Bill Oliphant RN, Captain of HM Naval Base, Portsmouth presided over an all-female RN Guard at the evening sunset ceremony, led by Guard Officer Lieutenant Jane Pizii RN. Ten per cent of HMS Duncan’s Ship’s Company are women, including the Logistic Officer, Navigating Officer, Medical Officer, and her most senior Engineering Warrant Officer.

Falklands 35th Anniversary Commemorative Tour

In November this year The Not Forgotten Association will be taking 20 veterans on a very special trip to mark the 35th Anniversary of the Falklands War. The group will follow the route of the British Task Force across the Island from Port San Carlos to Port Stanley, studying battlefield sites along the route, and paying homage those who fell or suffered injuries during or due to the conflict.

Cast from the military community reunite for one-off remembrance performance

A unique collaboration of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel, veterans and their families from across the UK are uniting to stage a one-off Remembrance performance that they will create in less than five weeks.

The Royal British Legion’s recovery through the arts initiative, Bravo 22 Company, is delivered in partnership with The Drive Project and in collaboration with Newcastle Theatre Royal to put on a production on Remembrance Sunday.

Bravo 22 uses theatre and sculpture to help the Armed Force Community during recovery.

Ceremony marks battle of Arnhem anniversary

A paratrooper’s stirring recollections of the Battle of Arnhem during World War Two were read out at a memorial service.

Operation Market Garden saw British and Polish forces land behind German lines in the occupied Netherlands in September 1944. After nine days of fierce fighting, the allies were defeated.

A memorial service and tree planting ceremony were organised by Broughton House, the Salford home for ex-servicemen and women, and Life for a Life Memorial Forests, to commemorate the solidarity shown by the UK, the Netherlands and Poland during the battle.

Plans approved for Broughton House veterans care village

Plans for a £12.5m Veterans Care Village at Broughton House in Salford have been approved.

Work on the ambitious scheme is due to start early in 2018 after Salford City Council gave it the go-ahead. Plans were submitted in July following public consultation.

Broughton House is the only home for ex-servicemen and women in the north west and in 2016 celebrated its centenary.

The redevelopment of the two-acre site will be partially paid for through a £3m grant from LIBOR funding, a government initiative to redistribute the proceeds of banking fines. Fundraising by Broughton House is ongoing.
