UK armed forces mental health care delivered in the primary healthcare setting 2013/14 to 2015/16 and AFCS awards for service attributable mental health 6 April 2005 to 31 March 2017

Statistics on UK armed forces personnel assessed with a mental disorder in primary health care and veterans with awards under the AFCS for service-attributable mental disorders.

This ad hoc statistical bulletin provides the number of UK armed forces personnel who were assessed and treated in primary health care for a mental disorder, looking to further understand how many of these were seen solely within primary health care and how many were referred to MOD Department of Community Mental health (DCMH) for specialist mental health treatment.

I was lucky enough to spend several years doing what I joined up to do – frontline weather forecasting at sea as a hydrographic and meteorological specialist. Following an operations tour in Basra, I became a Principal Warfare Officer. I returned to my specialisation at the end of my career.

Project Semaphore Update

Project Semaphore, a Royal Naval Association (RNA) initiative, continues to go from strength to strength. Whilst providing iPads for RN and RM Veterans, this is not an IT Project but an initiative that brings people together and builds communities. Mindful that many Veterans have a fear of technology, they feel overwhelmed at the idea of learning new skills, worry about their personal security and need help and support to realise the benefits of the financial savings offered online.

University regulator publishes guidance encouraging universities to include Service children in their support and outreach work

The SCiP Alliance has worked closely with the new government regulatory body for higher education, the Office For Students and its predecessor OFFA, to ensure Service children are considered alongside other underrepresented groups when universities formulate their outreach plans with their Widening Participation teams. Work by the SCiP Alliance and its partners is referenced in new guidance published by the OFS to inform institutions’ planning for 2019-20.

Lord Mayor and Lord-Lieutenant of Bristol welcomed on board HMS Bristol

The Lord Major and Lord-Lieutenant of Bristol were special guests of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) at HMS Excellent last week.

The Right Honourable Councillor Lesley Jones and Mrs Peaches Golding OBE were given a tour of the RNRMC’s offices before being welcomed on board their city’s namesake HMS Bristol by Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander David Price.
