Navy Wrens honoured at new tribute garden in Plymouth city centre

A tribute garden has been planted to commemorate a century since the formation of the Women’s Royal Naval Service. The new floral design describes the anniversary and was planted by a Royal Navy working party assisting the city council.

This project came about through a conversation with the former Lord Mayor’s consort and Councillor Brian Vincent. He was keen to support the National Centenary celebrations of the formation of the Women’s Royal Naval Service in 1917 and knew there were gardens around the City of Plymouth used for such purposes.

WRNs on parade to mark 100th Anniversary

Former members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) have joined the recruits at HMS Raleigh on parade to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of their Service.

Nearly 40 blue-badge WRNS accepted the invitation to take a trip down memory lane by spending the day at the establishment. The highlight of the event saw the former WRNS perform a march-pass during the passing-out-parade ceremony for the latest group of recruits, who were marking the completion of their initial training.

Soldiers sign up for Total Warrior Challenge to raise funds for Scotland’s Armed Forces children’s charity

26 June 2017 – A team of soldiers from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (SCOTS DG) have signed up for a gruelling Total Warrior challenge to raise funds for Scotland’s Armed Forces Children’s Charity.

The 11 strong team are hoping to raise over £2,500 by putting themselves through 10 km of 30 punishing challenges, including: crawling under barbed wire through 50 metres of mud; wading through iced water; rope climbs; jumping over flaming logs, and negotiating their way through hundreds of electrical currents in order to cross the finish line.

Facing Brexit, the UK’s ‘island nation’ dependence on shipping and seafarers is set to grow

As the UK finally embarks on Brexit negotiations, our island nation’s attention is being focused on the vital role our ports, harbours and seafarers will have to play in the future.

Increased world trade will likely increase the 95% of imports and exports that currently pass through our sea ports. Merchant ships continue to grow in size, the largest now 400m long and capable of carrying 20,000 containers. Half our food comes from overseas and the UK is dependent on imported oil, gas and biofuel for our power stations and vehicles.

Informing Scotland – Communicating about the Armed Forces Community in Scotland, Funded by the Forces in Mind Trust

Veterans Scotland is delighted to announce that it is to receive a total of £75,000 from the Forces in Mind Trust, over the next three years, in order to engage with decision makers in statutory and third sector organisations across Scotland and inform them about those preparing to leave the Armed Forces and the ex-Service community and to encourage them to ensure that they are equipped to meet their obligations to the Armed Forces Covenant.

poppyscotland Inverness opens door for Armed Forces Day

This year’s Armed Forces Day is on Saturday, and, to mark the special occasion, Poppyscotland’s Inverness Welfare Centre is hosting an open day on Friday in recognition of the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community in Scotland.

The event, which runs from 11:30am to 3pm, is open to all serving or former members of the Armed Forces in the north of Scotland, including Reservists and family members, and aims to bring people together in an informal setting to learn more about what support is available and how to access it. There is also the opportunity to join the Legion Scotland Inverness Breakfast Club at 10am that same morning.
