Joanna Lumley OBE accepts role as SSAFA Ambassador

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has awarded Joanna Lumley the role of Honorary Ambassador, for her work with its Gurkha beneficiaries.

Speaking about the appointment of the actress and charity campaigner, Lieutenant-General Sir Andrew Gregory, chief executive SSAFA said:

“Joanna’s commitment and unswerving support for the Gurkha community is an inspiration to us all and something that we felt should be formally recognised. Joanna has done so much to support our Berkshire branch and in particular its literacy programme for Gurkha wives and widows; we are delighted to announce her as a SSAFA Ambassador.”

Magazine editor from Surrey completes 24-hour cycle on Brands Hatch Circuit for military charity

A magazine editor from Surrey has completed Revolve 24, the Brands Hatch Cycle Challenge, for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Chris Bennett, 54 and from Bookham, admits the terrain of the course took him by surprise. He explains: “The race itself was much hillier than I thought, which just made the entire event tougher than I expected.

“The track isn’t lit up at all so you had to depend on your bike lights, which meant that in the small hours of the morning, just when the tiredness was kicking in, you had to really, really concentrate!”

Magazine editor from Surrey to compete in 24-hour Brands Hatch Cycle Challenge for military charity

A magazine editor from Surrey is currently training to compete in Revolve 24, the Brands Hatch Cycle Challenge, for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Chris Bennett, 54 and from Bookham, has been a supporter of Blind Veterans UK for a number of years now, through the partnership that his magazine, Optician, has with the charity. He explains: “Optician works with eye care professionals on the high street and in hospitals.

“We’ve been with Blind Veterans UK for a while now. The work they do in providing practical assistance to those in need and looking to adjust to sight loss is essential and it’s a cause we’re proud to support.”

Saltdean writer and poet to compete in Brands Hatch Cycle Challenge for military charity he volunteers for

A writer and poet from Saltdean is currently training to compete in Revolve 24, the Brands Hatch Cycle Challenge, for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-service men and women, for whom he is a volunteer.

David Attree, 44, has long been a cycling enthusiast and admits that the opportunity to take on the iconic track was simply too good to turn down. He explains: “The prospect of racing on a track as iconic as Brands Hatch was too good to be missed. Don’t get me wrong, it’s certainly a tough task, but I completed the London to Amsterdam ride both this year and last, so I’m ‘bike-fit’ as they say!”

Armed Forces Para Snowsport Team (AFPST) Spirit of Challenge

This year, the AFPST is privileged to be supported by Leonardo in our fundraising efforts, a company which is amongst the top ten global players in Aerospace, Defence and Security and one of the biggest suppliers of Defence equipment to the UK MoD. Our inspirational athletes conducted a tour of UK Leonardo sites in April and May, which enthused and motivated employees to start planning and carrying out their own fundraising activities for the AFPST ‘Spirit of Challenge’ campaign.

Highlights from the Edinburgh team have included a team of 12 ‘Leonardo Fitbitters’ who collectively completed over 1.5 million steps in just 5 days, raising over £2,000 in the process. 24 Apprentices based at the Edinburgh site climbed 1,345 metres to reach the summit of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

Over 4,000 people set Longleat aglow for Alabaré

Last Saturday (9th September) an astonishing 4,000 participants gathered in the iconic grounds of the Longleat Estate to take part in Glow in the Park:Longleat, the 6km UV family fun run.

The wet weather did not dampen the spirits and the crowd and atmosphere were buzzing with excitement. Families, running groups, groups of friends, individuals were swept around the course to 80s and 90s tunes. Disco The grounds were awash with neon sweatbands, face paints, neon tutus and smiles.

The course wound its way round the spectacular estate finishing in front of Longleat House and featured seven fun zones, including The Fluorescent Paint Blast, Squelchy Foam Zone, and for brave hearted runners The Lion’s Den!

The Spinnaker Tower Abseil, which has been fantastically organised by our Home Counties office since 2013, is just one of the extreme events that ABF The Soldiers’ Charity offers. Soaring 170 metres above Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, the Emirates Spinnaker Tower is taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big Ben, and has already established itself as a national icon for Britain.

Ceri’s marathon effort in tribute to family’s Second World War service

There are no half measures for RAF Benevolent Fund supporter Ceri Meehan, especially when she’s aiming to ‘give something back’ to the charity which has supported her family.

The 31-year-old is planning to run her very first road race, a half marathon distance, in tribute to the help the RAF’s leading welfare charity gave to her late grandmother Leading Aircraftswoman Edna Lacey. Edna lost her leg to bone cancer shortly after leaving the RAF following service during the Second World War. But she did not need to use a wheelchair until a second battle with cancer affected her mobility.

Blind veteran from Conwy completes three-day Iceland trek

A blind veteran from Conwy has completed a three day Iceland trek with Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women and The Not Forgotten Association.

Amazingly, Steve Thomas, 45 and from Llanrwst, was entered into the challenge, which was arranged by The Not Forgotten Association, unknowingly. Steve explains “The Rehabilitation and Training Manager from the charity’s Llandudno centre put my name in the hat without me even knowing!

“Out of the blue, he told me that I’d been picked as one of the lucky few. I thought, ‘right then, time to get training!’”

Police Officer from West Sussex to compete in Brands Hatch Cycle Challenge for military charity

A Police Officer from West Sussex is currently training to compete in Revolve 24, the Brands Hatch Cycle Challenge, for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Kala, 39 and from Littlehampton, will be taking on the challenge with her teammates at Angmering Cycling Club. Kala says: “Some of the guys took part last year and had nothing but positive things to say about it. It seems like a great challenge both personally and collectively.”

Kala, who works in the Missing People and Child Sexual Exploitation Team, admits the decision to fundraise on behalf of Blind Veterans UK was the result of a chance encounter.
