Majorca Holiday Provides Welcome Respite

This week another group of injured service men and women – many with their partners – have been staying at a remote farmhouse in Majorca on a respite break. The holiday has provided a very welcome opportunity for each of them to relax and for the couples to spend some quality time together.

Away from the pressures of rehabilitation, work and family commitments, our beneficiaries have been able to unwind and enjoy some ‘me time’ in the beautiful surroundings. For one veteran this week is the first time he has been away anywhere since being injured in Afghanistan.

Ex-Service personnel, employment and mental health

Mental health awareness has improved vastly in recent years. However, there is a great need for research in the field of veterans’ mental health.

Forces in Mind Trust’s Mental Health Research Programme is seeking high quality research in this area.

A highlight notice was issued six weeks ago, to encourage applications that propose innovative ways to identify, evaluate and/or propose new methods of improving employment/under-employment in former Service personnel with mental ill-health.

Bravehound Wins ‘Best Charity’ at National Lottery Awards

Glen Art’s Bravehound Project won the “Best Charity” category award at this years’ National Lottery Awards.

With a prize of £5,000, veterans Jimmy Church, Lee Aitchison and volunteers, along with Glen Art’s Founder Fiona MacDonald attended the award ceremony in London which will be shown on BBC1 on September 27th at 10.45pm

Ex-service men and women take steps towards a career in media this Freshers’ Week with the new Forces Media Academy

On the 26th September, 15 service leavers and veterans will embark on a free one-year Higher National Certificate (HNC) Media Production Course, provided by the newly created Forces Media Academy.

Service leavers are often highly renowned for their strong ability to communicate, but in spite of this the world of media has remained fairly un-traversed territory for them, with only 1% starting media careers in the last two years*.

Through this course, the Forces Media Academy, which is part of the Services Sound & Vision Corporation (SSVC), aims to provide 15 ex-service personnel with the training, experience and qualifications they need to forge successful careers in videography, digital, TV or radio.

Search begins for the fourth year of FiMT’s Specialist Fellows on Clore’s Experienced Leader Programme

The 2018 Clore Experienced Leaders Programme (ELP) is now open for applications. The one-year programme, starting in January, is open to individuals with six to ten years’ experience as a social sector leader and once again Forces in Mind Trust is offering to fund Specialist Fellowships.

The ELP is designed to further develop leaders who have ambition to drive social change in their communities and organisations. Clore Social has recently updated the Programme in response to in-depth sector research and consultation which showed participants would benefit from schemes tailored to specific levels of experience, with Clore 6 Cobseo designed for the Emerging leaders in the sector.

WRAC Association becomes Information Partner within the Veterans’ Gateway

The WRAC Association is proud to have become an Information Partner with the Veterans’ Gateway. With many ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) and WRAC (Womens’ Royal Army Corp) veterans, inc TA & TAVR veterans, not being aware of the Association or it’s Benevolent Fund it’s important that the Association has a visible presence wherever veterans may go to seek out assistance when they are in need of help. For our members, this underlines our mission to support all those who served with the ATS & the WRAC through not only our Benevolence Fund but also through the valuable work of the Association including the bi-annual publication of Lioness.
