Defence Select Committee report 2017: Ministry of Defence must uphold the Forces’ Covenant

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) must show that it has learned the lessons of the lamentable record, in managing Service accommodation, of CarillionAmey, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and the Ministry itself. So says the Defence Committee in its latest report, published on the 2018 Armed Forces Day, into the Armed Forces Covenant. (The Covenant expresses the moral obligation that the Government owes to those who serve or have served in our Armed Forces, and to their families.)

Armed Forces Pension Consultation regarding Amendments to the Armed Forces Pension Scheme 2015

The Ministry of Defence is consulting on proposed amendments to the Armed Forces Pension Scheme 2015, which will ensure the good conduct of the Scheme for its members. This consultation applies to the UK Armed Forces.

The government will consult the list of stakeholders identified in Annex A in the Consultation document, but also welcomes any comments or views on the proposals set out in this document from other interested parties.

We are pleased to share our latest DMWS Impact Report presenting our facts & figures, service overview, insights and case studies of 2017/2018. It is a year of celebrations, as 2018 marks DMWS’s 75th anniversary. Throughout our history, we’ve always responded to the challenges and opportunities faced by those we support, which has made us what we are today: a highly responsive and professional medical welfare service.

During World War 2 we were tasked to ‘provide a service aiding the sick and wounded at home and in the field’ to improve wellbeing and deliver capability. Since 1943 we have deployed to every major conflict and have received many prestigious awards for our service.

MPs lend support to ‘Count them in’ census campaign

MSPs gathered at the Scottish Parliament today (Thursday) to show support for Poppyscotland’s ‘Count Them In’ campaign. By highlighting the knowledge gap that is created by relevant questions not being included in the Census, the campaign seeks to identify where members of the Armed Forces community in Scotland live, and the issues they face, in order to tailor services accordingly.

Leading the call on the Garden Lobby Steps were MSPs Maurice Corry and Jackie Baillie, who serve as Convenor and Deputy Convenor respectively of the Armed Forces and Veterans Cross-party Group.

Four Essex women take on 100km walk for charity

Four women from Brightlingsea in Essex are preparing to take part in a 100km walk over 24 hours to raise money for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Nicola Pryer, 38, works for the charity and will tackle the challenge this July in a team with her friends Tessa Bates, 40, Tasha Hales, 43, and Marsha Robinson, 39. The group have been training over the past three months for the 100km walk from London to Brighton.

Frankie Urges Listeners To Educate Themselves And To Seek The Support They Need on PTSD Awareness Day

Wednesday 27th June was National PTSD Awareness Day in the USA, so Frankie Perez took the opportunity to speak out about mental health. He urged those listening to educate themselves and to seek the support they need if they are suffering.
Frankie is currently walking 1000 miles across the United States as part of the Walk Of America expedition team. He and his follow teammates have all suffered with their mental health as a result of their service.

Kev Carr is ex- British Army. He was injured in 2004 and has been a resident of The Beacon – a homeless veteran’s residence in Catterick – since August 2017. He is currently one of 6 veterans walking 1000 miles across the United States this summer as part of the Walk Of America expedition team, raising vital awareness and funds for the invisible wounds of war.

Veterans raise a flag for Armed Forces Day

The disabled veterans at The Royal Star & Garter Homes in Surbiton paid tribute to British Service personnel past and present by raising the Armed Forces Day Flag in advance of Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30 June.

The Flag was raised in front of residents, family, staff, volunteers and the local CCF unit.

Earlier in the day, the Home held a ceremony to present new residents with their Armed Forces Veterans badge. Residents who are partners of veterans received a special Spouses badge.

It’s Armed Forces Day this Saturday, but we’re here for officers all year round…

This weekend celebrates the contributions made by the British military, including officers.

The OA continues to support the officer community, whether that is helping them to find new careers after leaving the Armed Forces or access welfare support when needed.

Richard Sanders is a former Major in the Royal Logistic Corps the OA Employment Team supported. He had a one-to-one career consultation in March with Lisa Jones, an OA Career Consultant who also previously served as an Army officer, which helped him to be job ready and successfully apply for a new role.

Ed is a former Army Officer in the RDG. He left in 1997 and worked in London as a Business Development Manager and has set up and run his own businesses. He is now a full time dad.
