19th April 2018: Networking Event – Forces into Health – London

Join Forces into Health for an evening of networking. The group was formed in response to a growing number of Service Leavers who have either transitioned, or are thinking of transitioning, into the Health Sector. The Forces into Health network will aim to support individuals with contacts, advice and information, wherever possible. In particular, it signposts opportunities and recommends ‘points of entry’.

Carly Paoli to perform at the Soldiering On Awards!

Soldiering On Awards are delighted to announce that the internationally acclaimed classical singer Carly Paoli will be performing on Awards night!

We are delighted that Carly will be performing her new song ‘Liberty’ for the first time at the Soldiering On Awards. In addition to recognising all of our amazing Finalists, ‘Liberty’ will be sung as a special tribute in this anniversary year for RAF 100.

Army Veteran receives highest French honour for WW2 service

France’s highest military honour has been bestowed on Army veteran, Arthur Ogden. The prestigious Legion d’honneur medal was presented to Arthur for his contribution to the liberation of France during the Second World War. Arthur is a resident at The Royal Star & Garter Homes in Solihull, a Charity that provides specialist care for veterans and their partners who live with disability or dementia.

To celebrate Arthur’s award, the Home organised a tea party in his honour.

Reducing Veterans’ Homelessness To As Close To Zero As Possible

Every year there are well over a thousand ex-service personnel who become homeless or who face the risk of homelessness and are in urgent need of housing. With others experiencing crises in their lives, urgent intervention is needed to provide the necessary support for vulnerable veterans. Whilst there is a significant amount of good and effective provision to support veterans, new research from the University of York highlights there are still many ex-service personnel falling unnecessarily through the gaps.

Students and Veterans work together to create RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden

Military charity Help for Heroes and Sparsholt College have announced their partnership for RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018. Their garden, The Force for Good, will tell the powerful story of the role horticulture plays in the recovery and ongoing support of injured British Armed Forces personnel and their families. Individual stories are told through the three elements of the garden as the team of college and former-military gardeners inform visitors of the journey from injury or illness through to recovery and beyond. The Force for Good garden is a demonstration of how horticulture has given these individuals a second chance at life and how everyone can benefit from its therapeutic benefits.

Normandy Memorial to mark the 75th anniversary of the D Day landings

The Royal British Legion is supporting the Normandy Memorial which will be inaugurated next year to mark the 75th anniversary of the D Day landings. The Normandy Memorial Trust has spent the last 12 months researching the names of those who lost their lives under British command between 5 June and 31 August 1944. This is a unique collection of names which have never before been recorded and will appear on the British Normandy Memorial soon to be built in Ver-sur-Mer, Normandy.

‘Alabaré ambassadors event success’

‘Disaster in the Caribbean’ a fundraising event held by Wiltshire-based charity Alabaré’s ambassadors helped to raise over £3,000 for their Wiltshire Homes for Veterans service.

The evening at St. Francis’ Church Salisbury, saw a captivating talk by Lt Col Paul Maynard MA BSc RM of 40 commando Royal Marines, who led the humanitarian relief mission across the Caribbean in the wake of hurricanes Maria, Jose and Irma.

Conference: “The positive impact of respite breaks on Military Families”

Give Us Time is delighted to present our conference “The positive impact of respite breaks on Military Families” which will be held on the 16th of May at Canaccord Genuity HQ, London, EC2R 7AE.

The conference aims to highlight the positive impact that respite breaks have on military families. Professor McCabe, Nottingham University will set the scene for a case study based on the clinical feedback from our group break to Malta.

SSAFA Southend supported a veteran who died without any friends or family to attend his funeral

SSAFA Southend supported Mr King’s carer in arranging the funeral and encouraging the public and other organisations to attend, ensuring that he had a good send off.

Michelle Turner-Everett at SSAFA Southend arranged for a bugler and flag bearer to attend. In total, around 200 members of the public including the air cadets attended.
