Local veterans have been gifted a special festive hamper by CCP
It was time for an early Christmas present yesterday for the veterans supported by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity in the Bristol area.
Cheltenham-based charity CCP, or Caring for Communities and People, kindly donated 27 hampers filled with all sorts of festive goodies including mince pies, biscuits, cakes and coffee to those in need of some festive cheer.

Eight wounded, injured and ill UK veterans joined a UK crew to take on the Australian’s in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on Boxing Day.
The UK crew crossed the finish line almost 11 hours ahead of their friendly rivals in the race from Sydney to Hobart in Tasmania and finished in 49th place overall. Sir Robin Know-Johnston, the first man to sail solo, non-stop around the world in 1969, joined the UK crew as their on-board navigator.

Larry Cauchi, 58 and from Thornbury, decided to compete in the challenge after his wife came across the organisation. He explains: “My wife started a new role as Practice Manager of an opticians this year and wanted to put a charity tin on the counter. After a bit of research, and partly due to my own Service, she opted for Blind Veterans UK.
Read moreMrs Betty Johnson, the oldest volunteer at The Royal Star & Garter Homes, has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List for her service to charities and non-profit organisations.
Betty, who is 89, has been a volunteer throughout her life, working for the Girl Guides. She first started volunteering at The Royal Star & Garter Homes, a charity which cares for disabled veterans who live with disability or dementia, in 2000. Betty began volunteering originally at the charity’s former Richmond Home after her husband, who was a resident there, passed away.

This award acknowledges her passionate and unwavering commitment to improving care for older people, and her courage and determination in leading an innovative approach to care.

The consultant is Dr Dominic Aldington. Having served in the Royal Army Medical Corps he was the Subject Matter Expert in Pain to the Surgeon General and was responsible for organising pain relief from the point of injury until a casualty left the service.
