Partnership with Openreach raises £100k for SSAFA

Since announcing their partnership in 2015, Openreach, Britain’s digital network business, has now raised more than £100,000 for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. From taking part in the Big Brew Up to trekking the Icelandic terrain to raise money, the team has got behind the cause whole-heartedly. In addition, Openreach has hired nearly 2,500 veterans since 2011.

Already this year has recruited almost 300 trainee engineers from a Forces background. SSAFA continues to work with Openreach to support the Armed Forces community.

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is recruiting for it’s new challenge: Rifle Run

Rifle Run combines a military march and shoot with a competitive, cross country race. Along the course you’ll find three shooting challenges (two air-rifle and one shotgun). Be warned – for every shot you miss you’ll face a 250m penalty loop. Miss all your shots and you’ll run 15km in total.

What’s your tactic? Pace yourself and hit the targets, or push your “red zone” and lose your aim?

South East London blind veteran to march at Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday

A blind veteran from South East London is set to march at the Cenotaph in London this Remembrance Sunday (12/11) with the charity Blind Veterans UK.

Rob Long, 30, will be marching at the Cenotaph in London with more than 100 other blind veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Rob says: “Remembrance is a time to pay your respects to all those brave men and women who have paid the ultimate price for their country.

As 10 unique Aston Martin Vanquish S Red Arrows cars roll off the production line, one rolls into Canary Wharf – and you could win it!

The RAF Benevolent Fund launched the exciting raffle to win the limited edition car earlier this year. The car is worth £275,000 and tickets to win it are just £20, with all proceeds going towards the RAF’s leading welfare charity in support of the RAF Family, past and present.

The car will visit Canary Wharf in November as part of the area’s Remembrance Day commemorations this year – sited on Reuters Plaza. Plus members of the Red Arrows team including pilots and Red 1 Sqn Ldr David Montenegro and ‘Blues’ – engineers and other support staff – will be visiting the car on November 1 to help sell tickets.

Five-year-old boy donates birthday money to RAF veterans

Henry Conway, who turns six on 31 October, decided to give his birthday money away after seeing an RAF charity’s advert on television. The RAF Benevolent Fund’s latest TV ad, titled Show Your Pride, features Battle of Britain veteran Stan Hartill, double amputee Stuart Robinson and widow Jacqui Thompson.
Watching with his parents, Leo and Elizabeth, Henry was immediately moved by the ad.

Churchill’s legacy helps Stoll raise vital funds for Veterans

Stoll, the leading provider of support and housing for the Veterans’ community, held its inaugural Stoll Lecture on one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century: Churchill. Sir Winston’s grandson, The Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames MP, gave the lecture earlier this month at the Churchill War Rooms, from where Sir Winston led the Allied Forces to victory.

The Armed Forces Para Snowsports Team – Report

The Armed Forces Para Snowsport Team (AFPST) has gone from strength to strength this year, with growth in the foundation teams and truly impressive performances on the world stage. The charity is run by volunteers, and exists to aid the recovery of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and veterans. It does this through the medium of adaptive Alpine skiing, snowboarding and Nordic skiing, providing a winter sports focus for adaptive athletes to regain their spirit of challenge, competition and achievement.

Holidays for Heroes Jersey annual Military Gala Dinner

The Dinner was held on 12th October at The Royal Yacht Hotel in St Helier, Jersey. Organised by Stuart Sullivan, landlord of the Dog & Sausage, a very military Pub in St Helier! This was the seventh such dinner arranged by him and included a presentation and Q & A with former SAS Phil Campion together boxing champion and ​former ​sparring partner of Mike Tyson, “Big” Joe Egan.

​Joe is a superb Auctioneer and unique lots such as a painting of HRH Prince Charles as C in C Parachute Regiment were sold at great prices. ​This excellent evening raised almost £2000.

Holidays for Heroes – what we do

Launched in August 2008, with successive Lieutenant Governors as Patron – His Excellency Lt General Sir Andrew Ridgway, His Excellency General Sir John McColl and now Jersey’s current Lieutenant Governor Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton has honoured us with his patronage.

We have been able to provide over 2,400 holidays in the past nine years. Thanks to the generous support from Jersey and the UK, we have had the privilege of providing nine holidays in 2008, 165 in 2009, growing rapidly to about 300 per year.
