Blind veteran gardener from South Gloucestershire to have work featured in military charity’s Hampton Court show garden

A blind veteran from South Gloucestershire who has received vital support from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, will be contributing to the charity’s show garden at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this July.

David Thomas, 88 and from Chipping Sodbury, will be making his own miniature garden that will appear in the main garden as part of a special week of activities for blind veterans with green fingers held at the Blind Veterans UK training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.

In 2016, RAF veteran Steve arrived for the first day of a Business Experience programme hoping to turn his part-time massage work into a business he could be proud of, Steve lost his vision in 2004.

Steve defines the character and values of our Armed Forces, he has never given up and has completed 10 triathlons since accepting his sight loss. He has never lost his entrepreneurial motivation and he was determined to become self-sufficient again professionally as well as physically.

King George’s Fund for Sailors (Seafarers UK) to Celebrate 100th Birthday on 5 July

A charity set up in the midst of World War One to assist families of seafarers lost or injured at sea will be one hundred years old on 5 July.

Charting the charity’s history, a ‘Centenary Timeline’ – www.seafarers.uk/timeline – identifies milestone activities and the role of key individuals, including King George V who gave his name to what was originally known simply as the Sailors’ Fund.

Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun?! SSVC’s one-year project, The Forces Welfare Media Team, has come to an end. Funded by a grant from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund, the four-person team has covered almost 150 stories across TV, Radio and digital platforms. They’ve shone a light on the work of numerous forces charities from the one-woman dynamo that is Kath Ryan and ‘Cakes 4 Casualties’ to well established and historic organisations such as the Royal British Legion.

Glenart – 100th Anniversary of Wilfred Owen’s time in Edinburgh

Glen Art was invited by the Wilfred Owen Association to join them in events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the four months Wilfred Owen spent in Edinburgh, where he met Sassoon, and became , in his own words “A poets’ poet”

A grant from Awards for All to the WOA enabled Glen Art and Bravehound veterans to be at the heart of the project.

Thanks to fellow Cobseo members the Taxi Charity, the “Wilfred Owen “ actor Dave Clark and Owen’s nephew Peter Owen were sent off in style from a vintage taxi and Chelsea Pensioners.

On Saturday 17 June 2017, redheadPR sponsored the 6th leg of the first ever Tour de Troops, from Ashchurch to Didcot – and managing director Sara Tye joined in and rode the 56 mile leg.

The Tour de Troops is a fund-raising initiative by 20 bomb disposal experts from the British Army to raise money for the Felix Fund, a charity which helps those affected by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).

Military Charities join forces to launch new service for veterans

Veterans’ Gateway, a new service providing a first point of contact for veterans seeking support, launched across the UK last week. Veterans’ Gateway will improve access to welfare services and speed-up the time it takes for veterans to receive the support they deserve.

Developed in response to Lord Ashcroft’s Veterans’ Transition Review, Veterans’ Gateway is a £2 million service funded by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) from the Covenant Fund and will be delivered by a consortium comprising The Royal British Legion, Poppyscotland, Combat Stress, Connect Assist, the Ministry of Defence and SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity.

Full steam ahead for launch of volunteer scheme for ex-forces

The Royal British Legion and North Norfolk Railway (NNR) have launched a joint referral scheme for ex-Service personnel that will offer voluntary opportunities in a range of positions within a unique working environment.

Launched on Saturday 24th June at NNR Holt Station, during the Tracks & Trenches weekend event, the new scheme is a collaboration between the Legion and NNR that will offer recent service leavers and veterans a chance to gain new skills and meet like-minded people.
