SSAFA celebrates 1.25 million hours given by volunteers

Giving the gift of time to help Armed Forces community this Volunteers Week

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is marking Volunteers Week by celebrating its incredible 5,802 volunteers across the country who donated 1.25 million hours of their time last year.

Volunteers are at the heart of SSAFA’s work with the Armed Forces family. In 2017, SSAFA volunteers provided vital support to over 20,800 serving personnel, veterans and their families.

SSAFA branches provide personalised one-to-one support to the Armed Forces community in the area.

Urban vision volunteers transform veterans’ courtyard garden

Green-fingered staff from public-private partnership Urban Vision have transformed a rundown courtyard garden at Broughton House, the Salford home for ex-servicemen and women.

A team of 13 volunteers from Urban Vision spent almost 60 hours revamping the neglected garden.

Urban Vision is a joint venture between Salford City Council, Capita and Galliford Try. It delivers a range of property, engineering and planning services across Salford to boost development and regeneration.

OA Launches Hon Reps Roadshow

Some of the OA’s network of volunteers attended the first in a series of roadshows in London.

The Honorary Representatives (Hon Reps) provide a crucial link with beneficiaries. They visit applicants in their home to understand their situation, across the UK and overseas. The information is then passed to the Benevolence Team in London, which assesses their needs and organises the support required.

The RAF Association is proud to celebrate all of their 3,340 volunteers. To celebrate Volunteers’ Week we are spotlighting a few of these special volunteers. First up is Jeni, a Befriender from Lincolnshire.

I’m Jeni, I was in the RAF for 11 years as an assistant air traffic controller and now I’m an emergency care practitioner. I work and volunteer in Lincolnshire as a Befriender, volunteering since last December.

Julie McCarthy appointed as Director of Volunteer Operations at SSAFA

Julie McCarthy has been appointed as Director of Volunteer Operations at SSAFA. Julie is a former chief executive of the Army Families Federation and the wife of a serving member of the British Army. She currently holds the position of Head of Transformation at Blind Veterans UK. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience and I look forward to welcoming her to SSAFA later this year.

Age no issue for Brighton students volunteering for military charity

Two students living in Brighton are relishing their time spent volunteering for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Milena Murphy, 17 and currently at Brighton College, along with Dan Egelstaff, 18 and currently at Sussex University, started volunteering with the charity for separate reasons, though have each found the experience enriching and fulfilling far beyond their expectations.
