Project to end loneliness for Nottinghamshire Veterans wins national award

Forces Friends, a volunteer-led visiting service created in partnership between The Royal British Legion and Age UK Notts won The Forces in Mind Trust’s (FiMT) ‘Working Together’ Award at the 2017 Soldering on Awards.

The Forces Friends team was handed the prestigious award during a ceremony at the Park Plaza Hotel, Westminster, hosted by Angela Rippon and Cassidy Little, in recognition of their commitment and collaborative approach to supporting the Armed Forces community.

Another Successful Ski Week

In March 2017 we had a brilliant week with 23 new veterans and 20 buddies, ans welcomed back Carl and Martin B to the veteran support desk. We were a little worried about the ski conditions as the Alps have had a terrible year and this ski week wasn’t starting until the 11th March, the latest in the season we have ever had. But true to form we picked the best week of the year, as the day before everyone arrived we had 65cms of fresh snow.

Blind veteran from Aldershot to run 100 miles per month in 2017 for military charity

A blind veteran from Aldershort has pledged to run 100 miles per month this year, with the funds raised going to Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Andy Leitch, 42, was convinced to sign up to the ultra-challenge by Joey Sharma, a long-time supporter of the charity who also reignited Andy’s own passion for running.

Durham based charity Finchale’s CEO, Mel Pears MBE, presented a cheque for £355.00 to Lieutenant Colonel Barnbrook, Regional Director North East of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, at a ceremony at Finchale’s site in Pity Me on Thursday 23rd March 2017.

Finchale has worked with The Soldiers’ Charity over the past 2 years to provide tailored support to veterans from the North East of England to enable them to move from social exclusion to sustained employment.

Veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress to host business symposium

Educating businesses about the mental health treatment and support available to the veterans they employ is the focus of this year’s The Military Mind business symposium, sponsored by Thales UK.

Hosted by Combat Stress, the UK’s leading mental health charity for veterans, the event on 9 May coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week and will explain how and why some ex-service personnel and reservists develop mental health issues, and what their employers can do to help support them at work.

Physiotherapist and Team GB athlete from Sheffield to take on London Marathon for military charity

A physiotherapist and Team GB athlete from Sheffield is competing in the London Marathon this April for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Steve Canning, 37 and originally from Haywards Heath, Sussex, will be competing in the world famous event for the third time, and will be running in honour of his Great Grandfather, Leonard Howell, who received support from the charity over 100 years ago and created a legacy which continues to inspire his family to this day.
