Read moreThe Headley Court Charity was established in 1940 and in 1947 decided to acquire the estate at Headley Court in Surrey for the purpose of providing a facility for the medical rehabilitation of pilots and aircrew of the Royal Air Force. The facility opened in 1949 and the objects of the charity have since expanded to provide medical rehabilitation for all members of the armed forces.
This year the clinical facility will move to a new purpose built facility at Stanford Hall in the East Midlands and the MOD will vacate Headley Court.

While Eric Fraser acknowledges that there is much to be proud of in the provision of treatment and support to veterans by statutory and charity bodies, he has concluded that there is a need for rekindled national leadership and for consistent, long-term funding to protect specialist services for the lifetime of veterans.

He was medically retired on health grounds and is now an Associate Professor Mental Health and Veterans Studies, and leads the Northern Hub for Military Veterans and Families’ Research at Northumbria University in Newcastle. In his current role he is developing a Map of Need and an app that will make it easier for veterans to find information about the health and social care services available to them. Paul Gaffney, CEO of the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) met with Matthew at the charity’s headquarter yesterday, to discuss current veteran and military family research projects.

Richard Cullen, Founder and Chairman of Deptherapy & Deptherapy Education, received the Soldiering On Award on behalf of the charity at a black tie gala event at the Westminster Park Plaza in London on Friday 20th April 2018.
Deptherapy & Deptherapy Education was judged by an independent panel to be the winner in the Healthcare & Rehabilitation (Group) category.
Read moreVeterans’ mental health and the needs of the Very Seriously Injured and Brain Injured were among the issues raised by Help for Heroes on the Secretary of State for Defence’s first visit to one of the charity’s Recovery Centres, Tedworth House, on Monday.
The meeting comes a week before Help for Heroes appears before the Defence Select Committee, alongside other charity partners, as part of its inquiry into the mental health of Veterans and Serving Personnel. In written evidence to the Committee, the Charity raised concerns about MOD data collection in relation to mental health, as well as concerns with the MOD model of care which only allows for 6 months of treatment through the Departments of Community Mental Health (DCMH) before responsibility for care is passed to the NHS.

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity has announced that a brand-new home from home, to be opened in September 2018, will be re-named Norton House, Stanford Hall. The accommodation in Stanford on Soar, formerly known as Orchard House, will allow families visiting injured and recovering military personnel to stay comfortably and conveniently whilst supporting their relatives during the rehabilitation process.

Read moreHundreds of military veterans are set to benefit from a nationwide scheme to tackle the most complex mental health needs of ex-armed forces personnel, launched today (Sunday) by NHS England.
The Veterans’ Mental Health Complex Treatment Service has been designed after veterans and their families from across England were invited to tell the NHS how services would work best for them.
Backed by £3.2m of funding a year, the new service aims to help 450 veterans every year and will include help for substance misuse, physical health, employment, accommodation, relationships and finances, as well as occupational and trauma focused therapies.
