New research by national military charity shows more than half of the British public do not consider those who completed National Service to be veterans

As the country enters its annual period of Remembrance, national military charity Blind Veterans UK is calling on the public to rethink who they consider to be a veteran in a bid to reach the thousands of ex-Service men and women battling severe sight loss would could be missing out on the charity’s support.

New research released today (30/10/17) and conducted by nfpSynergy, on behalf of Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, found that more than half (54 per cent) of the British public do not consider those who completed National Service to be veterans, and a further 57 per cent of the public do not consider those who served in the Armed Forces but who have never seen active conflict to be veterans.

Hon Rep Finds Father’s World War Two Grave

Sydney Graham, an OA volunteer, recently attended a memorial service for the father he never met.

Edward Graham was killed during an ambush in Sicily on 13th August 1943. The Royal Irish Fusilier died aged 31, without knowing his wife had given birth to twin sons just 22 days before. Edward was initially posted as missing but was confirmed dead two years later. He was first buried at the roadside before being moved to an unnamed grave.

Service families encouraged to share attitudes towards higher education

Recent academic research by the University of Winchester has indicated that four out of ten service children who have the ability to progress into higher education are unlikely to do so.

Leading military charity, the Army Families Federation (AFF) is working with the university to find out more from Service families on this issue.

New research centre established to support Armed Forces Community

Forces in Mind Trust provides grant funding to Anglia Ruskin University to develop and operate a UK-based facility for easy access to UK and international research on veterans and their families

The new centre launches with free to use, state-of-the-art online hub

Policy makers, professionals and members of the public with an interest in ex-Service personnel and their families will be among those to benefit from a new research centre set up specifically to support the research needs of the Armed Forces Community, which launches this week.

Two-day ‘Supporting Seafarers’ conference coincided with launch of ten-year research report

Ten years on from the publication in 2007 of ‘Supporting Seafarers and their Families: Challenges for the Future’, a new report, ‘Navigating Change – A Review of the UK Maritime Welfare Charity Sector’ is being released at a major conference in London on 16-17 October.

Despite its huge scope, from small fishing vessels to large container ships, naval vessels and superyachts, the maritime welfare sector is one of the few industries to attempt to research and define the needs of its communities in order to better allocate charitable resources.

OA Leads Discussion on Recruiting Veterans Aged 50 plus

Yesterday the OA launched a roundtable discussion, in partnership with Alexander Mann Solutions (AMS), on recruiting veterans aged 50 plus.

Top UK companies attended the event hosted by AMS at their London headquarters. The discussion focused on ‘Older Veterans – An Untapped Talent?’ a report which compared the transition experience of Veterans leaving the Services pre and post the age of 50. This primary research was commissioned by the OA and conducted by Chime Insight and Engagement Group.

New Forces in Mind Trust Award: Assessing Public Attitudes towards ex-Service Personnel in Northern Ireland via the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey (NILTS)

Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) has awarded a grant of £31,500 to Ulster University, to produce a report on public attitudes towards ex-Service personnel in Northern Ireland.

Currently there is no evidence base which provides insight into how the general public view ex-Service personnel in the region. While work has been done to assess public attitudes towards policing in the years following the Good Friday Agreement, there is no equivalent for ex-Service personnel.

The report will be based on answers generated from the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey (NILTS), the largest public attitudes survey in NI, and covers a range of modules on community relations and attitude towards particular groups in the region.

New research shows armed forces charities helping tens of thousands access education and employment

Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) and the Directory of Social Change (DSC) today (3 October) release the report Focus On: Armed Forces Charities’ Education and Employment Provision, which reveals that a small number of charities provide a much-needed range of educational and employment services to 35,800 people in the Armed Forces Community.

Funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), this report is the second of six Focus On reports from DSC which provide more detailed information on Armed Forces charities’ support for key areas of need.

Media Statement – Armed Forces and Veterans Champions Gathering

Monday 2nd October sees Armed Forces and Veterans Champions from across Scotland meeting in Glasgow City Chambers to consider matters affecting members of the Armed Forces and Veterans Community. Champions from Local Authorities, NHS Scotland, Police Scotland, the Department of Work and Pensions, the Scottish Prison Service and Skills Development Scotland are attending, as well as representatives from many of the ex-Service and other charities. It is expected that in the region of 150 people will attend this third Annual Gathering.

The Scottish Government’s Veterans Secretary, Mr Keith Brown MSP, will present the keynote speech and will be followed by Maj Gen Bob Bruce, General Officer Scotland, who will provide an overview of the Armed Forces laydown in Scotland.
