Soldiering On Awards 2018 Finalists Reception

Last night saw the 2018 award finalists gather together for a special celebratory reception held at the House of Lords.

The evening’s host, Soldiering On Awards President, General the Lord Dannatt, welcomed 170 guests, including our 41 finalists along with their nominators, to the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace at the Palace of Westminster.

Speaking during the event, Lord Dannatt praised all the finalists. “Now into its eighth year, the Soldiering On Awards exists to unite all of our community, together in a common purpose. Our aim is to recognise the achievements of the entire diverse group of people who have served their country, including our Reserve Forces and Cadets.”

22nd March 2018: OA Event – Project Management Workshop – Swindon

The skills and experience required to manage a project are common within the Forces and many individuals look to transition into a new career within Project Management when they leave.
The day will start with an overview of project management within a business setting, including a review of qualifications followed by a series of presentations delivered by those already working in Project Management who will share their experience and highlight key factors to consider when entering a particular sector; The day will be finished by a Q&A led by HR teams within the PM sector who will be able to provide insight on the application process.

Extension to application deadline for the Forces Media Academy

Due to an increase in the number of applications for the Forces Media Academy’s Media Production Course, the FMA is now accepting applications until Friday 9th February.

The course is a free one-year Higher National Certificate (HNC) starting in September, and is run at SSVC’s headquarters in Buckinghamshire.

Each student also receives an £18,000 bursary from the Forces Media Academy’s principal charity partner, The Royal British Legion.

Veterans Spouses encouraged to register as deadline looming

Under the UK Armed Forces Covenant, in April 2016 the government Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) inroduced a National Insurance credits initiative aimed to support spouses or civil partners who accompanied their UK Armed Forces husband / wife / civil partner on an overseas posting and whose ability to be gain fully employed was limited.

UK Armed Forces spouses or civil partners National Insurance credits deadline end March 2018.

I see clients all the time who say they feel so despondent when they are searching for work and how “there’s just nothing out there!” They tell me about how they are spending hours every day combing all the key internet jobsites. Many of them will upload their CV onto jobsites such as Indeed, CV Library and Monster, as well as sending them to recruitment agencies thinking if they flood the market with their CV then they’re bound to get a hit – surely it’s just a numbers game?

Grants to charities that support the serving Army

The closing date for the next round of applications for grants from The Army Central Fund is Friday 16 March 2018. Successful applicants will receive their grant in the period 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019.

The majority of the funds available are awarded directly to the Army but there is some scope to award grants to those charities, including Cobseo members, that provide support to the serving Army and/or their immediate families. Each application is considered on its merits. It is a competitive process as the total applied for usually exceeds funds available. There is no guarantee that an application will be successful, particularly if your charity has been successful before.

Beth Spencer served for nine years as an Army Intelligence Officer, before leaving to work in Risk Management.

Why did you decide to leave the Army?
I had done everything I wanted in the Army, and needed fresh challenges. I was interested in working in Risk Management and Communications. Plus I had recently married another officer, and it is difficult to find suitable postings together in the same location every two years.

Leading from the Start

Retired Colonel Audrey Smith, now approaching 80, has always been a trailblazer, especially for women in the military. Here is her story.

Audrey always actively pursued the life she wanted, which often meant rejecting the social norms at the time. She went to Nottingham University in the 1950s, when few women went onto higher education, studying economics, a subject considered more typical for men. While at University, she joined the Officer Training Corps (OTC), which led to her joining the Regular Army in 1962.
