19th April – Sanctions, Support & Service Leavers: Social security benefits, welfare conditionality and transitions from military to civilian life

This event presents the first-wave findings of an ongoing longitudinal project funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) called Sanctions, Support and Service Leavers: Welfare conditionality and transitions from military to civilian life. This ground breaking project represents the first substantive research focusing specifically on veterans’ experiences of the social security benefits system in their transition to civilian life.

All aboard for launch of new charity racing team

An expanding sailing charity for injured veterans has unveiled its plan to move into the world of competitive racing.

In partnership with Help for Heroes and The Endeavour Fund, Turn to Starboard will launch a new racing division in May from a new office at Haslar Marina in Gosport.

The Cornwall-based charity was set up three years ago and believes sailing has a therapeutic effect on those affected by military operations.

New FiMT Award: seAp awarded funds to evaluate their Military Advocacy Service

Forces in Mind Trust has awarded funds of £126,872 to seAp, a charity that provides free advocacy services, to conduct a three-year evaluation of their Military Advocacy Service.

Initially a pilot scheme in Oxfordshire in 2013, the service was founded through seAp’s statutory mental health advocacy work, where they encountered ex-Service personnel who felt unable to access statutory services to meet their specific needs.

OA Receives Grant to Research the Transition Challenges of Service Leavers Aged 50 Plus

Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) has awarded £115K to the OA, to identify the transition challenges and barriers that all ranks of Service leavers aged 50 plus face when entering civilian employment.

This is the first time the specific challenges that older Service leavers encounter on the transition pathway will be examined.

Spanning a year, the project will take a tri-Service approach and cover all ranks. The research will be carried out with the Centre for Research into the Older Workforce (CROW) who specialise in research into employability of the older population.

Veterans Work Film to Showcase at National Employer Conference

The series of Veterans Work films highlight the benefits of recruiting veterans, and aims to challenge misconceptions surrounding the recruitment of Service leavers.

‘What does an idea sound like?’ is one of the three films created, featuring Matt Barber, Clare Balding OBE, ‘Judge’ Robert Rinder, Richard Wilson, Nick Knowles, Larry Lamb and Joanna Lumley OBE. The Veterans Work films challenge employers to actively consider employing veterans in order to capitalise on their expertise to fill recruitment skills shortages.

22nd March 2018: OA Event – Project Management Workshop – Swindon

The skills and experience required to manage a project are common within the Forces and many individuals look to transition into a new career within Project Management when they leave.
The day will start with an overview of project management within a business setting, including a review of qualifications followed by a series of presentations delivered by those already working in Project Management who will share their experience and highlight key factors to consider when entering a particular sector; The day will be finished by a Q&A led by HR teams within the PM sector who will be able to provide insight on the application process.

This webinar will be focusing on how your military skills and experiences could translate into medical practice business management, an area many ex-military officers add value to.
