Blind veteran from Hampshire meets The Countess of Wessex at military charity’s Hampton Court show garden

A blind veteran from Hampshire who has received vital support from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, has met The Countess of Wessex, who this year became the charity’s Patron.

Lewis Trinder, 92 and from Aldershot, met Her Royal Highness at the charity’s show garden at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The garden, titled ‘It’s all about community’, was one of three show gardens to receive a prestigious gold medal.

Blind veteran gardener from Newtown to be featured in military charity’s Hampton Court show garden

A blind veteran from Newtown who has received vital support from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, will be contributing to the charity’s show garden at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this July.

Andy Rae, 77 and originally from Hackney, has made a miniature garden for the flower show, titled Garden Towers, which won the award for the Most Creative Miniature Garden at the charity’s recent gardening week held at their training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.

Dennis Clements, 92 and from Orrell, has made a miniature garden for the flower show, titled The Relaxation Garden, which won the award for the ‘Best in Show Miniature Garden at the charity’s recent gardening week held at their training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.

SSAFA Celebrates 100 Years of women in the Armed Forces

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, is celebrating 100 years since women were legally permitted to serve in the British military.

This July marks the centenary of the formation of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), the first time women were formally enrolled in the UK Armed Forces. Back then, women’s roles involved cooking, administration and mechanical work. Today, one hundred years on they stand shoulder to shoulder with their male counterpart, with close combat roles in the Royal Marines, Royal Armoured Corps, infantry and Royal Air Force Regiment opening up to them last year.

Blind veteran gardener from South Gloucestershire to have work featured in military charity’s Hampton Court show garden

A blind veteran from South Gloucestershire who has received vital support from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, will be contributing to the charity’s show garden at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this July.

David Thomas, 88 and from Chipping Sodbury, will be making his own miniature garden that will appear in the main garden as part of a special week of activities for blind veterans with green fingers held at the Blind Veterans UK training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.
