Legion Care Home in Somerset given top award for dementia care

DEMENTIA care at a Legion-run home in Somerset has been branded “exceptional” by industry leaders.

Dunkirk Memorial House in Taunton was independently audited in the spring by Dementia Care Matters using the ‘Butterfly’ model featured on Channel 4’s Dementiaville.

The results have now been announced, with the home’s specialist dementia care wing, Dunkirk Mews, not only receiving its ‘Butterfly Homes 2017’ status, but also being classed as a ‘Level 1’ site in recognition of its “exceptional person-centred dementia care”.

New Forces in Mind Trust Award: Galahad Substance Misuse Solutions Limited to study impact of compulsory drug discharge on soldiers’ transition

Forces in Mind Trust has awarded a grant of £175,800 to Galahad SMS Ltd (Galahad), to conduct a study exploring the experiences of those who have been discharged from the British Army for drug use.

This is the first piece of research that looks specifically at the effect that a discharge, due to a failed drug test, has on the Service leaver and on their family. The 18-month study will address the current lack of data relating to ex-Service personnel’s misuse of drugs and the impact on all areas of transition.

TV adaptation of Robert Galbraith’s novel ‘Strike – The Cuckoo’s Calling’ launches on BBC1

Last Sunday, 27th August, marks the airing of the debut episode in the Cormoran Strike series with “The Cuckoo’s Calling”, at 9pm on BBC1. The adaptation of Robert Galbraith’s 2013 novel has created a buzz of anticipation with the viewings expected to be sky-high.

One of ABF The Soliders’ Charity’s beneficiaries, Barney Gillespie, acted as a consultant on the show for the lead role, Cormoran Strike, played by actor Tom Burke. Burke, who was a judge for The Soldiers’ Charity Photo competition this year, plays Afghanistan veteran turned Private Investigator who is exploring a botched murder.

11th September 2017: Carillion Vocational CV Workshop, Construction – Nottinghamshire

This event aims to inform Service Leavers of the best ways to tailor their CV in order to gain interviews for executive and management roles in the construction industry. The workshop will look at the importance of highlighting key skills, attributes and qualifications that will lead to employment within this industry.

The MD of Carillion Construction Services will open the event and presentations from two Operations Directors from the Building and Infrastructure divisions will follow. These presentations will cover some of the key things they look for in candidates.

New academic role for Veterans Aid CEO

CEO of Veterans Aid Dr Hugh Milroy has been appointed Visiting Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychological Medicine at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN).

He said, “I am proud and delighted to have what has been a long ‘informal’ relationship with King’s formalised in this way. Students are our future and I hope that by working with them we can open minds and challenge some of the orthodox thinking about veterans that leads to so much harmful stereotyping.”

Walking With The Wounded beneficiary, Kyle, set to run from Warrington to Ipswich in aid of wounded veterans.

Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) is exceptionally proud of beneficiary, Kyle, who is planning to run from Warrington to Ipswich in just 5 days. Kyle will be starting his 210 mile journey from Warrington on Monday 4th September, aiming to run 42 miles per day.

Kyle served with 9 Parachute Squadron RE (Royal Engineers) and served 2 tours of Afghanistan.

Kyle has explained on his Just Giving page: “I am trying to raise as much money as possible… for PTSD victims.” He is hoping to raise £1000 for the military charity Walking With The Wounded, which supports physically, mentally and socially wounded ex-servicemen and women back into independence by assisting them into sustainable employment and helping them to reintegrate back into society.
