Help for Heroes’ continued grant funding support for Sporting Force

Help for Heroes has committed further funding to Sporting Force, a charity set up by a wounded veteran to offer other injured and sick veterans work placements at professional sport clubs.

Sporting Force was launched by Tommy Lowther after he completed the Help for Heroes Pathfinder Experience and Business Experience course. The charity helped more than 100 veterans last year upon receiving an £80,000 grant from Help for Heroes, who has now pledged to grant fund a further £115,000.

Injured Afghan Veteran Running Marathon Des Sables For Two Service Charities

Colour Sergeant Martin Wilson was serving in Afghanistan with 2 Para in 2011 when he was shot in the head. Due to the extent of his injuries, Martin had to learn to read, write and talk again, showing remarkable determination and bravery. Several service charities have supported him during his recovery, but Martin will say that the NFA has stood closest to him throughout and has given him a purpose.

A Walk On The Wield Side

This 10-mile walk through the beautiful Hampshire countryside is taking place on Saturday 13th May at Upper Wield near Alresford to raise funds for The Not Forgotten Association. The walk gets under way at 9.30am, refreshments will be available at the start and at halfway and a hog roast will be served at the finish. The Glen Miller Tribute Band will be performing during the day and lunch can purchased for £10.

New Forces in Mind Trust award:  University of Salford to examine impact of UK benefits system on Veterans

A grant of a £171,995 has been awarded to the University of Salford, working with the University of York on a two-year project, to examine what impact interaction with the benefit system has on the transition of military personnel to civilian life, thanks to support from the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT).

The two-year study, called Sanctions, support and Service leavers: welfare conditionality and transitions from military to civilian life, will investigate the effect of a conditional welfare system in the UK, including the use of sanctions, and how this affects ex-Service personnel and their families.
