Blind veteran from Cumbria receives prestigious medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A Second World War blind veteran from Cumbria has been formally presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

William Gerard Lackey, 96 and from Ulverston, was presented with the prestigious honour by Philip Daniel, the Honorary French Consul of Liverpool, on behalf of French president Francois Hollande. The special ceremony took place at a reunion dinner held in Barrow-in-Furness and was organised by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, from whom he receives support.

Veterans Charity Shortlisted for Impact Award

Veterans Aid has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.

The 85-year-old charity for veterans in crisis is in the running for the Asian Voice Social Impact Award, which recognises organisations for the social impact they have created and their contribution to society.

Durham charity given funding boost to support North East Veterans

A charity working with wounded, sick and injured veterans enabling them to move from social exclusion to sustained employment has received a major funding boost.

The Durham based charity, Finchale, has received a much-needed grant of £103,000 from Help for Heroes, a charity which is all about giving the very best support for life to the wounded veterans, servicemen and women and their families whose lives are changed by their injuries and illness.

Former Royal Military Policewoman takes on LEJOG Challenge for Blesma

A former Royal Military Policewoman is running 880 miles to raise money for Blesma, the Limbless Veterans.

Suzanne Turner, 44, from Chartridge, Buckinghamshire is running from John O’Groats to Lands’ end in 21 days to raise money for wounded veterans.

Prince William and Lady Gaga get their Heads Together on mental health to help show young people that it’s

Prince William and Lady Gaga have joined forces to encourage more people to have an open conversation about mental health as part of the Heads Together #oktosay film series.

The Royal Family’s Facebook page hosted the World Premiere of a new film of the pair in conversation over FaceTime from their respective homes in London and Los Angeles. They discussed the powerful films that have been released showing people from all walks of life discussing their mental health challenges under the #oktosay banner. Lady Gaga praised them for the ‘beautiful stories’ they told.

The Duchess of Cambridge meets marathon runners as London Landmarks get Headbands on for ‘Heads Together’

The Duchess of Cambridge today met Team Heads Together runners at Kensington Palace taking part in a final training session for the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon and joined them in placing a Heads Together headband on a Royal Mail post box.

Around 70 post boxes on the London Marathon route will wear Heads Together headbands, to match the headbands being provided to all 39,000 runners, which they can wear on race day no matter the cause they are running for. This morning Prince Harry handed out headbands to some of the runners as they collected their race numbers at the opening day of the London Marathon Expo.

Invictus Games athlete takes on London Marathon in aid of Military Charities

Luke Delahunty, 44, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire is taking on the London Marathon to give back to three charities that have helped him after injury; Blesma, the Limbless Veterans, Help for Heroes and RAF Benevolent Fund.

On 3rd October 1996, Luke was serving in the RAF when he was involved in a road traffic accident. The accident resulted in Luke being paralysed from the chest down.

RAF pair take on London Marathon to support wounded veterans

Two RAF personnel are taking on the London Marathon to support Military Charity, Blesma, the Limbless Veterans.

Sergeant Dai Smoldon, 44, from Watton, Norfolk and Corporal Dickie Baker, 28, from Upton, Norfolk are taking on the 26.2 mile challenge after hearing about Blesma’s work through a friend who has benefited from their support.

Veteran from Plymouth to compete in 100 mile bike ride for military charity that supports his father

A veteran from Plymouth is set to compete in the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women that supports his father.

Andrew Whitby, 55, signed up to the epic 100-mile route after watching the acclaimed documentary, Fixing Dad. The heart-warming story, allied with Andrew’s own passion for cycling, meant that the temptation was all too much to deny. He says: “The documentary was brilliant, incredibly heart-warming. I’m also a keen cyclist and have completed the Tour de Moor a few times, so it’s got to the point where I’m thinking, ‘right, what’s the next challenge going to be then?’.”
