New FiMT Award: Probation Institute awarded funds to develop e learning programme

The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) has awarded funds of £41,500 to the Probation Institute for a year-long project to develop an e learning product to enable service providers to identify ex-Service personnel under supervision in the criminal justice system.

After completing the e learning training, practitioners will better understand the strengths and vulnerabilities of ex-Service personnel, and have increased awareness of support available within Armed Forces charities with sector expertise and how these can be of help.

Gwynedd blind veteran Billy nominated for prestigious Soldiering On Award

A blind veteran from Gwynedd has been nominated for a prestigious Soldiering On Award for his work with Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, from whom he also receives support.

Billy Baxter, 54, is the charity’s Rehabilitation and Liaison Officer in its training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno. His role sees him mentor and motivate the charity’s beneficiaries. Regarding his nomination, Billy says: “It’s a great honour to be recognised in the Inspiration Award category among my fellow nominees, who themselves have done some truly extraordinary work.”

RBLI’s transformative employment support programme for veterans expands across Wales after backing from the Morrisons Foundation

Unemployed Welsh veterans are to be handed a lifeline after a transformative employment support programme for ex-service personnel has been given financial backing.

Currently in Wales, 1 in 20 has served in the Armed Forces while, across the country, working-age veterans are twice as likely to be unemployed as civilians.

However, military and disability charity Royal British Legion Industries is now set to tackle the issue by rolling out additional courses of their LifeWorks programme after receiving more than £96,000 from the charitable arm of supermarket giant Morrisons, The Morrisons Foundation.

Transport Secretary visits Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company as part of strategy to help more disabled people into work

Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling yesterday (03-04-18) toured Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company – a social enterprise which employs injured veterans and people with disabilities – as part of the government’s plan to help one million more disabled people into work.

The Transport Secretary met with workers at the Kent-based BBMC, which is run by charity Royal British Legion Industries and employs more than 100 people – more than 70% of whom are ex-service personnel, have a physical or hidden disability, or both.

St. Andrews blind veteran receives military charity’s highest honour

A blind veteran from St. Andrews has received a special award from military charity Blind Veterans UK for his outstanding achievements in rock climbing following his sight loss.

Garry Morrison, 36, received the award at the Blind Veterans UK Founder’s Day Awards, held at the charity’s training and rehabilitation centre in Brighton last Monday (26/03).

Garry says: “I was really humbled to be presented with this award, particularly because I know that without the support of Blind Veterans UK I wouldn’t be where I am today.

2018’s Walk for Peace

We are thrilled to announce that Give Us Time has been selected as one of the nominated charities for 2018’s Walk For Peace!

The Walk for Peace has been held every year for the last twenty-eight years and in the past five years has raised over £1.3 million which has been distributed to 136 local, national and mayoral charities.

This will mean that our efforts will now attract additional funding – meaning that we can help more military families.

Success at the Ideal Home Show

The NFA have just completed a whirlwind couple of weeks at Olympia as the Ideal Home Show’s Official Charity Partner. Nominated for the role by the fabulous Annie Riley of the Swingtime Sweethearts, we were joined by nearly 300 volunteers from 17th March – 2nd April who between them collected a phenomenal £17,318.35! The whole team worked tirelessly and demonstrated just how lucky the NFA are to have such loyal supporters and friends.

Fishing Fun

Another successful NFA fishing trip is complete and has provided, for many, a welcome morale boost and new friendships. It’s more than just a fishing trip, as one beneficiary said:

“I have come away feeling that whilst learning new skills and overcoming personal obstacles, I have also in a small way helped others & they in turn have done like wise. Friendships have been made & bonds forged to the extent that we have now organised a trip of our own, all with a military theme, as this is and always will be our safe area.”
