2017 – the centenary of The Women’s Royal Naval Service

2017 marks the centenary of the formation of The Women’s Royal Naval Service. On Wednesday 8th March, a number of specially invited guests will be present as HRH The Princess Royal launches the WRNS100 centenary and opens an exhibition at the National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth entitled “Pioneers to Professionals: Women and the Royal Navy”.

Relaunch for Launchpad

This week, award winning veterans’ charity AF&V Launchpad rebrands as Launchpad and introduces a new logo to reflect the organisation’s mission and goals.

The new logo has a combination of the Union Flag, shaped as a triangle above the word ‘Launchpad’ to signify a roof – representing the security that the charity provides. Coloured lines extend below the ‘house’ to denote the different services. It is hoped that the shorter name and simpler, more striking logo will make the charity more recognisable.

RAF Brize Norton Boxing Night Raises £1200 for the RAF Benevolent Fund

A boxing night at RAF Brize Norton has raised £1200 for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The event, organised by Corporal John Kearns and Sergeant Anthony Lydon, with the help of the RAF Brize Norton Fire Section, saw bouts between boxers from the RAF, the Royal Navy and local boxing clubs. An auction also took place mid evening for the chance to win boxing gloves and an RAF boxing shirt signed by Tony “Bomber” Bellew the current WBC Cruiserweight Champion.

OA’s drive to digitalisation continues with the launch of Virtual Careers Fair

Following the launch of its employment App at the end of last year, the OA has continued to embrace its drive for digitalisation of its services, with its first Virtual Careers Fair which will be held in April 2017.

Working in collaboration with social enterprise, SaluteMyJob, the fair will be aimed at serving and former Service men and women seeking to transition into management roles in the commercial and Third sectors.

Forces Welfare Media Team – update

The SSVC Forces Welfare Media Team has been busier than ever in recent weeks.

Reporter Victoria Smith recently filmed with Rick McGillivray, a veteran helped out of homelessness by E-FAN, a Covenant-funded project run by the Defence Medical Welfare Service and the Cheshire & Greater Manchester Rehabilitation Company. Rick fondly remembers his Army career but no longer has any photos from the time. The Welfare Team helped him to appeal on social media which led to numerous messages of support by friends he made in the Army and at school, as well as a number of photos.
