The Royal British Legion welcomes funding to ensure veterans get full value of their war pensions in Wales

Veterans who receive social care in Wales will now get the full value of their war disablement pensions thanks to a new £300,000 allocation by the Welsh Government. This follows a campaign by The Royal British Legion, which highlighted a discrepancy that saw certain awards to veterans injured in service reduced to cover some of their social care costs.

New Legion Advice Hub for Loughborough

The Royal British Legion will be hosting a new monthly ‘pop in’ advice centre in partnership with Charnwood Borough Council.

Starting on Thursday 18th May, and continuing on the third Thursday of every month, the new advice centre will be hosted at the Charnwood Borough Council offices on Southfield Road between 10am and 12pm.

The new session at the Council will provide the public with the opportunity to drop in and access support being offered by The Royal British Legion.

Horticultural therapy first for RHS Chelsea as soldiers help plant the roots of recovery

SOLDIERS wounded on active military service and supported by horticultural therapy charity HighGround will reap what they sow next month when they help to create a healing eco therapy garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show for Miracle Gro.

In what is thought to be the first project of its kind at the world’s most famous flower show, a team of current and former patients, volunteers and staff from Armed Forces charity HighGround will spend three days creating Miracle Gro’s ‘Come to your Senses’ garden in the Great Pavilion.

Charity Commission: Ransomware threat – keep your charity safe

The Charity Commission, the independent regulator of charities in England and Wales, is issuing this alert to charities as regulatory advice under section 15(2) of the Charities Act 2011.

Charities could be at risk and are urged to be vigilant.

Over 200,000 organisations, including the National Health Service (NHS), in 150 countries have been affected by a recent ransomware attack. The vulnerabilities exploited by the hackers are the same for charities as they are for individuals, public or private sector organisations.

Poppy cascade from Wallace Monument remembers Arras fallen

Poppyscotland has released 46,000 Poppy petals from the top of the National Wallace Monument, in Stirling, to commemorate the end of the Battle of Arras. At precisely 11am this morning (16th May), the poppies fell with each petal representing a Scottish soldier who lost their life or was wounded during the conflict.

As part of the petal drop, there was also a commemorative service which was led by The Royal British Legion Scotland (Legion Scotland). The service featured a wreath-laying ceremony which was conducted by Poppyscotland CEO Mark Bibbey, Legion Scotland CEO Kevin Gray MM and a pupil from the local Queen Victoria School.

New employment support for spouses of North East Armed Forces

Military spouses from across the region are to get help finding a new career as North East charity Finchale launches its new TRUEview spouse employment project, a project designed to help job seeking military spouses and partners, later this month.

The charity has been awarded a grant from the Ministry of Defence Armed Forces Covenant Grants Fund and will deliver the project in association with A&M consultancy Ltd (specialists in employment and career focussed programmes).

Veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress hosts business symposium

Hosted by Combat Stress, the UK’s leading mental health charity for veterans, this year’s Military Mind business symposium, sponsored by Thales focused on the mental health treatment and support available to veterans in employment.

The event, held on 9 May to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week, was attended by 65 organisations interested in learning about the support they can offer veterans and the benefits employing them can bring.
