Your Armed Forces Community Needs You!

SSAFA urgently calls for new volunteers to support veterans who are feeling lonely and isolated

The latest research by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has found that more than two in five (41%) veterans aged 25-45 have felt lonely, isolated, or suicidal since leaving the Armed Forces. With one in five (22%) veterans stating that they would feel less lonely if they had a stronger support group.

In a bid to meet this need and ensure no veteran’s call goes unanswered, SSAFA is urgently appealing to local residents to join its network of dedicated volunteers and provide support for the Armed Forces community.

Drawing and Talking partners with The Annington Trust to offer dedicated Armed Forces Foundation Training Day on Friday 6 April

The event will be the first opportunity that Drawing and Talking has had to directly support Service families in the UK. The company has already trained over 18,000 professionals in more than 8,000 schools and charities in its safe and easy to learn serial drawing technique.

Catherine Beagley, managing director of Drawing and Talking, comments: “We’re incredibly thankful to the Annington Trust for hosting and subsidising this event as it ensures our training is more affordable for those wanting to attend this impactful day.

Captain James Wadsworth CGC launches 2018 ultra challenges

Captain James Wadsworth CGC has launched hard endurance events to raise funds for the Felix Fund, which supports bomb disposal experts and their families through therapeutic breaks.

With years of fundraising under his belt, Capt. Wadsworth has launched The Captain James Wadsworth Challenge for 2018, which will see participants running and cycling across difficult terrains and conditions. The two tough endurance challenges will take place between June and July.

Give Us Time supporter, Chris Grech, a Maltese National, has been shortlisted for the International Award at the 2018 Soldiering On Awards!

Give Us Time is thrilled that one of its long-time supporters, Chris Grech, has been shortlisted for the International Award, at the Soldiering On Awards, which will be decided in April this Year.

Chris, a Maltese National, has been supporting Give Us Time since 2014, donating accommodation at the Balkan Jewel Resort in Bulgaria to British Service families in need of respite and recuperation.

When Chris Grech heard about the charity Give Us Time, formed to meet the needs of Service families, he offered to run a pilot group holiday: a week at the Balkan Jewel Resort in March 2015.

3 night break for military families with additional needs children taking applications

As we enter the New Year, SSAFA is excited to propose a new pilot for the Family Break. This new format will be open exclusively to military families who have children additional needs and disabilities. It offers a weekend away at the Calvert Trust Exmoor on 23rd March 2018, for which there are 30 places.

21st February – Veterans@Heritage Outreach

Mission Motorsport have set up a new outreach programme for veterans called Veterans@Heritage. On the third Wednesday of every month veterans are invited to the former WWII bomber base, RAF Bicester, now the UK centre of historic motoring, Bicester Heritage.

You don’t need to be interested in classic cars to attend. Veterans@Heritage is an opportunity to have a brew, banter, speak to caseworkers from Veterans UK, SSAFA and RBL and maybe even spend some time on the test track. Each month will present different opportunities to learn photography, mechanics, local military history and much more.

Defence Medical Welfare Service enters 2018 as a finalist in three prestigious awards

DMWS is delighted to announce that the charity has been shortlisted as a finalist for the 2018 Soldiering On Awards in two categories, and The Charity Film Awards.

The Soldiering On Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of those who have served their country, and the diverse people and groups who work together in support of the Armed Forces Community. Soldiering On Awards President and Vice President and co-Chairs of Judges, General the Lord Dannatt GCB CBE MC DL and Debra Allcock-Tyler, led a distinguished panel of judges to assess the entrants in each award category.

Armed Forces Families suffering in silence on Blue Monday

Help for Heroes has released new research which reveals that one in four (23 per cent) partners or family members of an Armed Services Veteran or Service Person state that their own wellbeing and mental health has been directly affected as a result of their family member’s situation. Many are suffering in silence with 16 per cent saying they would try to cope with any issues alone, with only 5 per cent saying they would seek help from a mental health professional.
