Veterans Aid joins Euro-Stakeholders to stand up for homeless

A Veterans Aid team joined homelessness experts from throughout Europe at the Annual FEANTSA Policy Conference in Poland.

More than 350 individuals including frontline service providers, academics, advocates, local, national and European policy-makers working in the homelessness and related sectors participated in the event held in the historic European Solidarity Centre in Gdansk.

Staff from military charity drive through 24 countries in five days to raise money for blind veterans

Two members of staff from a national military charity have driven through an incredible 24 countries in just five days. The funds raised will be going to the blind veterans their charity supports.

Chief of Staff, Nathan Muirhead and Head of Transport, Chris Kirk are both employees of Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaierd ex-Service men and women.

The drive, which took place from Monday 8 – Friday 12 May, saw Nathan and Chris take in an incredible 24 countries, including but not limited to, France, Switzerland, Albania, Kosovo, Serbia and Turkey. Chris says: “It was a huge challenge.

Higher levels of support needed for the most vulnerable Service Leavers across the UK

Service Leavers who are likely to struggle to adapt to civilian life should be identified by the Ministry of Defence before they leave the Armed Forces and offered tailored support to help transition effectively, according to two Veterans’ organisations. Armed Forces charities Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) and Stoll, the leading provider of supported housing for Veterans, are calling for services to be developed across the UK that ensure the most vulnerable Service Leavers receive the health and welfare support they need, and avoid homelessness and unemployment. Service Leavers who are most likely to struggle with adapting to civilian life include people with mental health issues, and those with no settled home or family life to go to after their transition into civilian life.

A research seminar bringing world-renowned experts together to discuss sight loss will be taking place in London this week (24/05). The “Life Beyond Sight Loss” Seminar is the first in a series looking at various research and innovation ideas in relation to blind veterans.

The seminar is part of an exchange programme called Project Gemini where members of the US organisation the Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) will be visiting Britain to join Blind Veterans UK this week.

The Centre for Veterans’ Health is delighted to announce the opening of our new Veterans’ Pain Clinic

The Veterans Pain Clinic will be free of charge to all veterans who are able to provide Proof of Service. The costs are to be covered by the Hospitals’ Military Grants Fund charity.

The consultant is Dr Dominic Aldington. Having served in the Royal Army Medical Corps he was the Subject Matter Expert in Pain to the Surgeon General and was responsible for organising pain relief from the point of injury until a casualty left the service.

Royal Navy personnel and veterans join forces to mark 100 years of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) and appeal for 2,500 Wrens to access support

Blind Veterans UK beneficiaries and serving Royal Navy women. Blind Veterans UK beneficiaries and former WRNS (Wrens), enjoyed a special lunch at the charity’s Brighton centre yesterday (18/05), as part of a week of events celebrating female veterans.

They were joined by women currently serving in the Royal Navy to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Wrens.

In the Role of Royal Patron of DMWS Her Royal Highness, The Countess of Wessex, GCVO attended as a key advocate of the Charity’s work.

DMWS provides a unique service to fill the welfare gap

According to Sir James Lawrence Munby, President of the Family Division of the High Court of England and Wales the practice of separating elderly couples against their wishes when one or both move to care homes must end (The Times, 10 May 2017). The Defence Medical Welfare Service has been providing welfare to the Armed Forces community when they are on a medical care pathway since 1943 and has recently launched several projects to support the Aged Veteran community. Our Welfare Officers are acutely aware of the challenges faced by aged veterans and are well place to offer tailored support.

To celebrate Dementia Awareness Week, military veterans living with dementia were thrilled to welcome Tickle – a delightful miniature Shetland pony owned by The Phoenix Children’s Foundation to The Royal Star & Garter Homes in Solihull. All residents at the Home were invited to meet Tickle and spend a wonderful morning in her company, with plenty of opportunity to give lots of care and affection to the tiny pony
