Interview with Sophie Maynard, Forces Media Academy Student

The OA spoke to Sophie Maynard about studying Creative Media Production.

Tell me about your Service history
I joined the Royal Navy in November 2014, and became a Warfare Officer. I left as a Sub Lieutenant in October 2017.

What is the Forces Media Academy?
The Academy is for Service leavers and veterans wanting to work in the media, including television, film, radio, digital and marketing. It launched in September 2017 and offers a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Creative Media Production.

X Factor stars bring festive cheer to bereaved Forces children at charity Christmas party

Over 150 bereaved Forces children were given a welcome surprise this weekend as X Factor stars, Holly Tandy and Leon Mallett joined them at the annual Scotty’s Little Soldiers Christmas Party.

The singers, who were part of this year’s competition, were joined by Britain’s Got Talent Magician and Scotty’s Little Soldiers ambassador Lance Corporal Richard Jones at a magical event exclusively for children who have lost a parent while serving in the Armed Forces.

Members gathered with their families at the PGL adventure centre in Caythorpe, Grantham on Saturday (2nd) for a day of game show themed fun.

RAF Association Hotel Manager shortlisted for national award

RAF Association Hotel Manager Colin Lee was shortlisted for a national Leadership Award from the 3rd Sector Care Awards. The award celebrates someone who demonstrates an outstanding contribution to care and service excellence.

Mark Shields, RAF Association Head of Care and Housing Services nominated Colin for the award. After seeing the level of support and team spirit at the Association’s Wings Breaks hotel Rothbury House, Northumberland he said of the nomination: “Colin was nominated for the Award because of his total commitment to care and outstanding leadership that has significantly contributed to excellence within a culture that puts people and quality first.

The judges have deliberated on 22nd November to decide upon the shortlist of this years Soldiering On Awards Finalists. CEO Visits Veterans Village

Lee Holloway, OA CEO, saw at first-hand how the Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) supports the Armed Forces community.

The RBLI is a leading employment charity for veterans, especially those with disabilities. The RBLI village in Kent provides housing, training, career opportunities, welfare support and care to more than 300 people.

Ren has started several businesses, and believes in people supporting themselves through enterprise. For much of her career, Ren helped organisations with their sales and marketing strategies, focusing on business growth and client acquisition.
