Churchill’s legacy helps Stoll raise vital funds for Veterans

Stoll, the leading provider of support and housing for the Veterans’ community, held its inaugural Stoll Lecture on one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century: Churchill. Sir Winston’s grandson, The Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames MP, gave the lecture earlier this month at the Churchill War Rooms, from where Sir Winston led the Allied Forces to victory.

The Armed Forces Para Snowsports Team – Report

The Armed Forces Para Snowsport Team (AFPST) has gone from strength to strength this year, with growth in the foundation teams and truly impressive performances on the world stage. The charity is run by volunteers, and exists to aid the recovery of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and veterans. It does this through the medium of adaptive Alpine skiing, snowboarding and Nordic skiing, providing a winter sports focus for adaptive athletes to regain their spirit of challenge, competition and achievement.

Holidays for Heroes Jersey annual Military Gala Dinner

The Dinner was held on 12th October at The Royal Yacht Hotel in St Helier, Jersey. Organised by Stuart Sullivan, landlord of the Dog & Sausage, a very military Pub in St Helier! This was the seventh such dinner arranged by him and included a presentation and Q & A with former SAS Phil Campion together boxing champion and ​former ​sparring partner of Mike Tyson, “Big” Joe Egan.

​Joe is a superb Auctioneer and unique lots such as a painting of HRH Prince Charles as C in C Parachute Regiment were sold at great prices. ​This excellent evening raised almost £2000.

Holidays for Heroes – what we do

Launched in August 2008, with successive Lieutenant Governors as Patron – His Excellency Lt General Sir Andrew Ridgway, His Excellency General Sir John McColl and now Jersey’s current Lieutenant Governor Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton has honoured us with his patronage.

We have been able to provide over 2,400 holidays in the past nine years. Thanks to the generous support from Jersey and the UK, we have had the privilege of providing nine holidays in 2008, 165 in 2009, growing rapidly to about 300 per year.

Holidays for Heroes Jersey – Fundraiser at the Boat House Restaurant in St Aubin

Support for Holidays for Heroes Jersey is so strong in Jersey and on 14th September, a fundraising event at The Boat House Restaurant in St Aubin, provided guests not only with a grandstand view of the Jersey International Air Display, but also an opportunity to help two deserving causes.

A total of £15,000 was raised which included more than £12,000 donated to Holidays for Heroes Jersey and just over £3,000 to help provide relief aid for Barbuda – the first Caribbean island to suffer the full force of Hurricane Irma.

Project Semaphore – update

Project Semaphore, is an RNA initiative funded by the Aged Veterans Fund, to provide an iPad to address the issue of digital isolation in older Veterans which exacerbates loneliness and poverty. It is not an IT Project, it is a Project to provide friendship, support and practical help. With the outcome of better spiritual and mental health: a recent study equated loneliness in the elderly to the effect of smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

The devices have been built to our specification and include shortcuts to the RN, RNA, RMA websites as well as several pre-loaded Apps, mindful that using an IT equipment for the first time can be overwhelming, the links to the RN are familiar and help to dilute initial fears.

Blind Veterans UK issues its 1000th Synapptic device

Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, has issued its 1000th Synapptic device, a tablet with award-winning all-in-one software for people who are blind or vision-impaired.

Michael Ashman, 88 and from Surrey, received the device, a tablet, while attending the charity’s training and rehabilitation centre in Brighton. In doing so, he became the 1000th blind veteran that the charity has provided a device with.

Five tips to help you get through Bonfire Night

We understand that Bonfire Night can be a difficult time of year, the specialist clinical team at Combat Stress gives the following advice:

Plan your evening : The first thing to think about is how you want to spend the evening and whether you might like to go out or would prefer to stay home.

Bonfire Night can be a useful opportunity to begin to ‘break the link’ between current triggers and past traumatic experiences, by focusing on what is different about fireworks and your environment.

It may be that being exposed to strong triggers feels too much, if that is the case, think about where you will be on Bonfire Night and prepare using some of the techniques described below.

Deptherapy honours Members and Supporters in Awards Ceremony

Scuba Diving rehabilitation charity Deptherapy honoured its Programme Members, Supporters and Corporate Sponsors in an Awards Ceremony on Saturday 21st October during the DIVE 2017 show weekend.

The Deptherapy Awards Ceremony, the first of its kind for the charity, took place in conjunction with the Pharoah Dive Club 10th Anniversary Bash at the Village Hotel, Solihull. The evening event, which was attended by over 200 ticket holders and organised by Steve and Clare Rattle, was a celebration of ten successful years of Pharoah Dive Club and Roots Red Sea. The Anniversary Bash was also recognition of the special partnership that exists between Deptherapy and the Egyptian dive resort, which hosts the majority of the charity’s overseas training programmes.
