Granddaughter of Prudhoe veteran urges others to refer their loved ones to charity’s support this Grandparents’ Day

This Grandparents’ Day (1 October) Chloë Costello, the granddaughter of a Prudhoe veteran, is urging others with grandparents who served in the Armed Forces and who are now struggling with sight loss to get in touch with Blind Veterans UK.

Chloë, 18, from Corbridge, said: “It was really sad for us when grandad lost his sight because the simple things he used to enjoy, like watching the football or reading the paper, suddenly became a real struggle. But since he found out about Blind Veterans UK he’s become so much more confident and learned so many new skills. The other day he even added me on Facebook!”

Grandson of Nottingham RAF veteran urges others to refer their loved ones to charity’s support this Grandparent’s Day

This Grandparent’s Day (1 October) Adam Knight, the grandson of a Ruddington RAF veteran, is urging others with grandparents who served in the Armed Forces and who are now struggling with sight loss to get in touch with Blind Veterans UK.

Adam, 27, from the Hockley area of Nottingham, said: “We’re really close as a family and it was difficult seeing my grandad battle sight loss, particularly as he’s a man who values his independence. But since joining Blind Veterans UK, he’s learned new skills, made friends and received equipment and training to help him live life to the full. The support has been amazing.”

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity Greenwich Hospital Grant awards £40,000 to Combat Stress

Veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress has received a £40,000 grant from The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and their strategic partner, Greenwich Hospital.

This generous grant has been awarded to go towards core treatment and support costs for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines veterans that come to the charity. Combat Stress provides specialist treatment at its treatment centres, practical and clinical support in the Community and a free 24-hour Helpline.

A poem to find peace

A recent email from a family, who benefitted from our services, has highlighted once again how a break away can really help in the recovery process. Glen suffers from PTSD and his respite break at the Heroes Haven Swanage was the chance for him and his family to reconnect after a long period of suffering and hardship.

“Heroes Haven Swanage was a very relaxing location and allowed me to gather my thoughts”, Glen explained, “I even started to write poetry in the gardens as I truly found peace. I have added the poem I wrote in the garden at Heroes Haven.”

The Soldiers’ Charity Supports ‘Back To The Beaches’ with The Taxi Charity

The Taxi Charity For Military Veterans, formally known as The London Taxi Benevolent Association For War Disabled (LTBAFWD), was founded on the 17th February 1948 in London.

The Taxi Charity are a group of London taxi drivers who volunteer their services to take veterans on a range of trips. They span from day trips around Britain to historical spots throughout Europe such as: Normandy, Dunkirk, and Wageningen, Netherlands.

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity Awards £140,000 to Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans England and Wales

Veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless will benefit from a new grant of £140,000. The grant, awarded to Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans by ABF The Soldiers’ Charity will benefit the charity’s Welsh Homes for Veterans who will receive £50,000 of the grant, and £90,000 will be used by England Homes for Veterans to provide supported accommodation and support for those Veterans in need.

Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans offer support to service men and women across the UK who have left active service and who are experiencing difficulty adapting to civilian life. These former service personnel are homeless or at risk of being homeless, usually due to a lack of support network and social isolation after discharge.
