Give Us Time at the Soldiering On Awards

Last week Give Us Time was excited to attend the Soldiering On Awards at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in support of Chris Grech who was nominated for the International Award. Chris is the owner of the gorgeous Balkan Jewel Resort in Bulgaria and long-time donor and supporter of Give Us Time.

Though Chris didn’t go home with the award, we were delighted his commitment to the armed forces community was recognised and it was our privilege to spend the evening surrounded by amazing and inspiring individuals.

Charity receives Duke of York Community Initiative Award

HRH Prince Andrew The Duke of York visited Sheffield Cathedral today Tuesday 24th April 2018 to present his Community Initiative Awards to a variety of successful charities from all around Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire based Help 4 Homeless Veterans charity represented by its Founder Tom Wood and his wife Jean accompanied by the CEO Steve Bentham-Bates during the presentation ceremony received the Duke’s Award for their work supporting homeless Veterans in the County.

Written Statement – Support for the Armed Forces in Wales

Alun Davies, Cabinet Secretary for Local Government & Public Services:
I am publishing my assessment of the benefits and value of appointing an Armed Forces Commissioner for Wales. This follows my commitment during Plenary on 29 November, to meet with the Cross-Party Group for Armed Forces and Cadets and make an informed decision following the meeting.

Having met with the Cross-Party Group and considered the work being undertaken in Wales, and across the UK and beyond, I set out my decision below;

A tremendous amount of progress has been made in Wales over the last two years. Working closely with the Armed Forces Expert Group, we have delivered on key areas.

Scottish Veterans Commissioner calls for a reinvigorated approach to veterans’ healthcare in Scotland and more ambition and innovation in meeting their long-term needs

SCOTLAND – In his latest report published today (Wednesday April 24), The Scottish Veterans Commissioner has called for a return to the days of more attention, ambition and innovation in meeting the long-term health and social care needs of Scotland’s veterans’ community.

While Eric Fraser acknowledges that there is much to be proud of in the provision of treatment and support to veterans by statutory and charity bodies, he has concluded that there is a need for rekindled national leadership and for consistent, long-term funding to protect specialist services for the lifetime of veterans.

Former Lieutenant Commander speaks passionately about DMWS support

Dr Matthew Kiernan, a former Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander, is passionate about helping ex-servicemen and women. He was medically retired on health grounds and is now an Associate Professor Mental Health and Veterans Studies, and leads the Northern Hub for Military Veterans and Families’ Research at Northumbria University in Newcastle. In his current role he is developing a Map of Need and an app that will make it easier for veterans to find information about the health and social care services available to them. Paul Gaffney, CEO of the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) met with Matthew at the charity’s headquarter yesterday, to discuss current veteran and military family research projects.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers launch month of May marathon in honour of our fallen heroes

This May, children’s Armed Forces charity, Scotty’s Little Soldiers, is set to get the country moving with the launch of its newest challenge, the Month of May Marathon.

In memory of our fallen heroes, Scotty’s Little Soldiers is asking businesses, associations, clubs, families and groups of friends, to join together to cover 26.2 miles in any way they wish.

From long walks in the park to evening bike rides after work, all money raised will go a long way in helping the charity continue to deliver a high level of support to bereaved Forces children when they need it the most.

Deptherapy wins prestigious Soldiering On Award

The outstanding work of scuba diving rehabilitation charity Deptherapy & Deptherapy Education has been recognised with the presentation of a top military Award.

Richard Cullen, Founder and Chairman of Deptherapy & Deptherapy Education, received the Soldiering On Award on behalf of the charity at a black tie gala event at the Westminster Park Plaza in London on Friday 20th April 2018.

Deptherapy & Deptherapy Education was judged by an independent panel to be the winner in the Healthcare & Rehabilitation (Group) category.

Veterans’ Gateway Launches Campaign to Help Ex-Service Community with Housing

This spring, Veterans’ Gateway has partnered with Shelter, the UK’s leading housing and homelessness charity to raise awareness of some of the key issues faced by the Armed Forces community and how they can access the right information and help with their housing concerns.

A service launched last year, Veterans’ Gateway provides a first point of contact for veterans who need support, connecting them with the right organisation that can help on a range of issues including housing, finance, mental health and employment.
