Read moreLast night saw the 2018 award finalists gather together for a special celebratory reception held at the House of Lords.
The evening’s host, Soldiering On Awards President, General the Lord Dannatt, welcomed 170 guests, including our 41 finalists along with their nominators, to the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace at the Palace of Westminster.
Speaking during the event, Lord Dannatt praised all the finalists. “Now into its eighth year, the Soldiering On Awards exists to unite all of our community, together in a common purpose. Our aim is to recognise the achievements of the entire diverse group of people who have served their country, including our Reserve Forces and Cadets.”
Read moreA man from Berkshire is currently training to compete in this year’s London Marathon for the beneficiaries of Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.
Charlie McAllister, 22 and from Windsor, has long hoped to complete the world-famous course and decided that 2018 would be the year he finally committed. He explains: “It’s always been on my bucket list. Everyone knows about the atmosphere, the significance and, of course, the immense challenge involved. I’m just excited to get out there and experience it firsthand”
Read moreTV Star and SAS veteran, Ollie Ollerton, is best known for his recent role in the popular show SAS: Who Dares Wins where he put contestants through a series of endurance tasks. He is now taking on a brand new personal challenge to support SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.
Ollie is a keen supporter of SSAFA and works closely with his local branch in particular, remembering that giving back to the military community is of vital importance.
On 17th February the challenge kicks off, consisting of a 30 mile or 30 km trek across the beautiful Uttoxeter countryside whilst wearing 30lb backpacks, teams of four will compete to cross the finishing line.
Read moreA Wiltshire blind veteran is celebrating a new relationship this Valentine’s Day after finding love with a fellow veteran through Blind Veterans UK. Lindy Elliott, 71 and from Mere, met Graham Ward, 59 and from Fleetwood, last year.
Both Lindy and Graham have received specialist support from Blind Veterans UK since losing their sight.
Lindy says: “Sharing your life with someone is so special and Graham and I feel lucky to have found each other. The moment we met we just clicked. We felt like we’d known each other for years.”

Historian Dan Snow will host the gala evening at London’s Royal Albert Hall where the newly restored film will be played on a 40ft screen. The commemorative evening, on May 17, the 75th anniversary of the raid, will pay tribute to Wing commander Guy Gibson and his comrades in the legendary 617 Squadron.

The group gave a presentation to the former servicewomen at the care centre run by the RAF Benevolent Fund, before a special gala dinner on Wednesday. The evening was the highlight in a week of activities to celebrate 100 years of women in the Armed Forces, specifically the RAF.

Read moreAn Aldershot blind veteran, who has been supported by Blind Veterans UK since losing his sight, will celebrate his 70th wedding anniversary this Valentine’s Day. Lewis Trinder, 93, married his wife Vera, 90, on 14 February 1948.
Lewis says: “We met when we were both quite young, but I always knew I wanted to marry her. Our relationship survived the war and our marriage has survived seventy years, so we must be doing something right!”
The couple met when they were teenagers living in Haywards Heath. Soon after Lewis was deployed overseas.

The families had different backgrounds, but all were in need of quality time away to reconnect as a family unit. James, 10, said this “was the best holiday of his life” and couldn’t wait to tell his friends at school all about it. His parents are both serving in the RAF and it is difficult for him to spend time apart from them, saying what he misses the most when they are away is cuddles.
