West Sussex veteran to take on 100 km challenge for military charity

A veteran from West Sussex is currently training to compete in a 100km walk from London to Brighton for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Dan Baldwin, 41 and from Worthing, will be taking part in the challenge with his friends Peter, Neil, Huw and Gary. He explains: “Gary, Pete, Neil and I were all in the Royal Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (REME) together. In fact, Gary, Pete and I all started the same apprenticeship course at Princess Marina College Arborfield together in 1994.”

Nottingham man to run London Marathon for military charity that supports his friend

A man from Nottingham is training to compete in this year’s London Marathon for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women that supports his friend.

Chris Walker, 42 and originally from Kent, applied after being inspired by friend and multiple Invictus Games medal-winning blind veteran, Jamie Weller. He says: “I’ve been saying for over ten years now that I’d love to do a marathon, but of course, like everyone else, there’s always been a good reason not to.

Mentoring trial to support serving personnel transitioning into civilian life

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity has launched a new trial mentoring service to support service leavers in the transition to civilian life when they leave the Forces.

Working with the Ministry of Defence, Army, and the Career Transition Partnership, the two year trial at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire will supplement the assistance already provided to Service Personnel preparing for civilian life. The service will provide a SSAFA mentor for those who would benefit from additional support in navigating the transition challenge.

Charity challenge to raise £100,000 for training boat

A new charity challenge is looking for supporters to help raise £100,000 in a year for a training boat to help injured veterans.

The Float-A-Boat campaign hopes to raise £100,000 during 2018 for the sailing charity Turn to Starboard – to help meet demand for its sail training service for veterans affected by military operations and their families.

As well as taking part in key fundraising events including a 24-hour life raft survival challenge, ‘It’s a knockout’ competition and a coastal obstacle course, supporters are invited to make a donation by text message or create their own fundraising event.

Proposal to provide new homes and support services to homeless and vulnerable Veterans across the country

Servicemen and women leaving the Armed Forces, who struggle to reintegrate into civilian life, would benefit from vital new housing and support services in a landmark proposal announced today by Stoll, the leading provider of supported housing for Veterans in the UK.

Stoll intends to provide at least three hundred more homes for vulnerable and disabled Veterans in need, subject to the outcome of a consultation, to help address the shortfall in Veterans’ housing identified in research by the University of York.

Officers’ Association (OA) Career Consultants will give employment and transition advice to Service Personnel on Armed Forces radio.

Every week, Chris Kaye, a presenter on the radio station for Catterick Garrison, will discuss with an OA Career Consultant a different aspect of starting a new career after leaving the Armed Forces. Upcoming topics include coping with the challenge of transition; preparing for interviews and networking. The interview will then be shared across the whole British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) network.
