Auction night raises money for two local charities

Last week, two Worthing-based charities received a cheque of £1,180 at a presentation held at The Mahaan restaurant.

Chippingdale Cricket Club hosted an auction event at The Mahaan to raise funds for The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) and Worthing Churches Homeless Project (WCHP). Auction prizes were kindly donated by local businesses and groups, and the money raised on the night will be split between the two charities.

Llandudno blind veteran Billy presented with charity’s highest honour

A blind veteran from Llandudno has received the highest honour from military charity Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Billy Baxter, known to many in Llandudno as he serves as the Town Crier, received the honour at the Blind Veterans UK Founder’s Day Awards, held at the charity’s training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.

Billy, 53, was presented with the Ted Higgs Prize, considered to be the charity’s highest honour. It was given to Blind Veterans UK in memory of the late Ted Higgs, a blind veteran who lost all of his sight in 1944, whilst serving with the Royal Artillery in the Second World War. It was kindly donated by members of his family and the award is given to a war-blinded veteran in recognition of lifetime achievement with Blind Veterans UK.

New Forces in Mind Trust Report: A Pilot Study to Support Veterans in the Criminal Justice System

A new report, identifying the challenges faced by ex-Service personnel who enter police custody and ways to better support them was released today (3 April) and has found that the ex-Serving personnel in this study who are identified at the point of contact in police custody have responded encouragingly to targeted support.

The report, ‘A Pilot Study to Support Veterans in the Criminal Justice System’, was funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) and delivered by Anglia Ruskin University, to examine the engagement and impact of a pilot veteran intervention programme, Project Nova.

Unique sculpture depicting WW1 arrives at Kelvingrove Museum

A stunning, symbolic sculpture depicting the last remaining tree in a First World War battlefield is set to go on display at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to coincide with the launch of the commemorations of the Battle of Arras which began 100 years ago this week.

The sculpture, entitled “FRANCE 1914”, was created by artist Simon Burns-Cox who donated it to Poppyscotland, an organisation which provides life-changing support for the Armed Forces community. Having previously been on display at the Scottish Parliament and the People’s Palace Museum, it will be exhibited at Kelvingrove for the coming 12 months, before moving to Glasgow’s Riverside Museum next year. Thereafter, it will be auctioned off with the funds going to Poppyscotland.

A new online research resource on veterans’ health has just been launched

The Health of Veterans’ Research Team (HVRT) at King Edward VII’s (KEVII) Hospital is a new research group established to conduct literature reviews on veterans’ health. The HVRT has just launched their website which will act as an online research resource on veterans’ health by providing literature reviews, exclusive data, as well as news updates. Their website acts as a portal for sourcing information on the health of veterans, and also details more about the team and their current and future research projects. Support for veterans funding boost for North East

A Charity which supports veterans and their families across the North East to move from social isolation into employment has received a cash boost of more than £100,000 to continue providing individual support to Army Veterans.

The grant comes from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, the Army’s National Charity, and will enable Durham based, Finchale to continue their work with North East Veterans throughout 2017.
