High Wycombe welcomes The Royal Star & Garter Homes

Staff and Governors from military charity The Royal Star & Garter Homes received a warm welcome from the Mayor of High Wycombe at an event to introduce the Charity to its new neighbours on Thursday 16 March.

The Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, the Chairman of Buckinghamshire County Council David Letheren, Councillor Suzanne Brown, the Mayor of High Wycombe, local councillors and other supporters and stakeholders attended the reception at The Wycombe Swan to preview the plans for the new state-of-the-art Home being built in the Hughenden area.

Edinburgh school takes on military marching competition for UK’s service charities

Pupils from George Watson’s College take to drill for Red, White & Blue Day

On March 16th, senior pupils from George Watson’s College in Edinburgh took part in a special military marching house competition to raise awareness for Red, White & Blue Day, a national fundraising day for the UK’s main service charities that the School has supported regularly over the last few years. The competition saw the pupils battle against each another in their respective school Houses, with the winners being chosen by the Garrison Sergeant Major of the Edinburgh Army Garrison.

The tenth annual Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch is to take place on Thursday 6th April 2017 and will feature HRH The Duke of York as its Guest of Honour. Our nation owes much to the men and women of its Armed Forces who give so much to defend our values and way of life. The conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have highlighted these sacrifices. Today, the unveiling of a new memorial in Victoria Embankment Gardens, Westminster by Her Majesty The Queen, honours both the UK Armed Forces and civilians who served their country in the Gulf region from 1990 – 2015.

Forces Welfare Media Team – on the road again

The SSVC Forces Welfare Media Team have been on the road again, filming stories about the work of the Cobseo charities. In the last couple of weeks, they’ve produced videos, radio reports and online articles about the Life Skills programme at Blind Veterans UK’s Llandudno Centre, the expansion of SEAP’s advocacy services in Plymouth and plans for a new Veterans’ Village at Broughton House in Salford.

Give Us Time: an Opportunity for Families in need in May

Give Us Time takes holidays donated by owners of holiday groups, hotels, holiday homes and timeshares, and matches them with military families in need of rest, rehabilitation and reconnection so that they can be able to re-bond as a family.

We help both veterans and service personnel from all the services. Eligible to our services are those who are physically or mentally injured, have spent long periods of time away from their families, bereaved or in financial need.

Veterans meet their Penpals

Veterans at The Royal Star & Garter Homes in Surbiton and pupils from Hinchley Wood School have become penpals in an initiative to get generations writing to each other run by It’s not Your Birthday But.

Glitter pens and fountain pens in hand, the 12-year old pupils and the residents, who are mostly in their eighties, have been sending letters and postcards to each other throughout February, sharing the stories of their everyday lives and discovering that they had a great deal in common.
