How do you network effectively?

Neil Williams, a former Royal Marines officer and now CEO of recruitment agency Crucial Group Ltd, shares his networking top tips.

When I decided to leave the Royal Marines I had no plan other than doing ‘something in business’. Networking was vital in helping me identify and pursue a new career.

At its heart, networking is just a conversation, and the military trains you to be an effective communicator. It gives you the opportunity to meet successful and interesting people, learn from their experiences and find opportunities.

17th May 2018: OA Event – ONWaRD Networking – Manchester

Kindly hosted by Barclays, we will be joined by a variety of local employers who will share their industry insights, and discuss the transition from the military into civilian employment. This is a fantastic chance to hear from officers now in civilian careers and gain some transition top tips. Networking at any stage of your career is vital, and during this event you can make new contacts, hear about opportunities and discuss challenges.

ONWaRD are a free to all networking group hosting monthly meetings in the Manchester. The informal meetings are a chance for officers to network in the North West region and provide support for one another in civilian employment.

Frogmore House and Garden to open for annual charity open day for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity on 6 June

Frogmore House and Garden, the charming royal retreat set within Windsor Castle’s magnificent Home Park, will open to the public in aid of SSAFA on 6 June 2018 as part of the annual charity garden open days.

Built in the 17th century, Frogmore House became a royal residence in 1792 when George III purchased it for his wife, Queen Charlotte. Since then, successive monarchs have enjoyed the tranquil surroundings and delightful interiors. Although it is no longer an occupied royal residence, Frogmore House is frequently used by the Royal Family for private entertaining.

Partnership between Help for Heroes and Essex Wildlife Trust grows

A growing partnership between Help for Heroes and Essex Wildlife Trust has this week broken new ground.

The military charity and conservation charity have been working together for several years. Over the last six months a new project has seen Help for Heroes veterans, their families and volunteers coppicing hazels from Essex Wildlife Trust land. They have then been taught the new skill of weaving hazel hurdle fences which are being installed into the ‘Hope on the Horizon’ garden at Colchester Recovery Centre on Wednesday.

£10,000 prize to be granted to the winner of the Heropreneurs Veterans’ Foundation Award

All too many veterans find leaving the Armed Forces, and returning to civvy street, a huge struggle due to physical injuries and mental health issues. This may result in homelessness, unemployment, family breakdown, and a dramatic deterioration in their well-being. The Veterans’ Foundation is a charity that was created to raise funds for military-related charities and other organisations that do excellent and effective work in helping veterans in need. This Heropreneurs Award category seeks to recognise an individual in civvy street, or a business, that has given outstanding help to such veterans.

Veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress to host business symposium

The power and potential of veterans in the workplace is the focus of this year’s free-to-attend Military Mind business symposium.

Sponsored by Thales and presented by Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health, the symposium will explore practical ways companies can ensure the workplace wellbeing of their veteran and reservist employees.

Held on 15 May in London and 17 May in Edinburgh, the event coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week and will centre on what support companies can implement, regardless of their size or sector.

30th and 31st May – World famous Beating Retreat performance returns for 2018

The Massed Bands of the Royal Marines will perform their world-renowned Beating Retreat on London’s iconic Horse Guards Parade on 30th and 31st May.

Only performed every two years, this magnificent pageant of military music, precision drill and colour dates back to the 16th century and is regarded as a piece of living history.

The Massed Bands of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines are a collection of 200 highly-talented musicians comprised of Royal Marines from five individual bands based at Portsmouth, Gosport, Plymouth, Scotland and the Commando Training Centre.

The Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton International Air Day will open its gates on Saturday 7 July 2018 to 40,000 visitors, just as it did over 70 years ago, in 1947 at its first ever Open Day. As one of the Southwest’s largest one day events, the award-winning Somerset airshow offers an action-packed day out for all the family with thrilling flying displays and amazing ground attractions. Over five hours of incredible flying displays will feature fast jets, historic warbirds, helicopters and formation display teams. There are already some rare and exciting aircraft confirmed.
