Forces Media Academy Officially Opened by HRH The Duke of York

The first intake of students at the new Forces Media Academy met The Duke of York yesterday as he opened the state-of-the-art media facility.

Fifteen service leavers and veterans have just started the unique one-year Higher National Certificate (HNC) Media Production Course at the Academy, which is run by the Services Sound & Vision Corporation (SSVC).

The Duke of York, who is Royal Patron of SSVC, spoke to the students during a tour of the Academy.

He said: “To provide a course like this, for either retiring or leaving veteran service personnel, is absolutely second-to-none.

Walking With The Wounded received £40,000 grant from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity

In December 2016, Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) were awarded a grant of £40,000 by our Charity. The money has helped to fund their mental health support programme, Head Start, as well as provide Employment Advisor support for veterans, some of which are at risk of homelessness.

WWTW was established in 2010 and has since supported our veterans to re-integrate back into society by sustaining their independence. Their main focus is to utilise the inherent skills of our armed service personnel to support them on their journey back into employment in the civilian workplace.

Red, White & Blue Day 2017

Last Friday, 6th October, marked the Charity’s annual Red, White & Blue day in schools. The annual fundraising initiative, which raises vital funds for ourselves, The RAF Benevolent Fund and The Royal Navy, and Royal Marines Charity, helps us to promote awareness of the difficulties faced by Service families.

Former Wrens and Naval Servicewomen celebrate WRNS100 in Portsmouth

Naval Servicewomen and generations of former Wrens who served in support of the Royal Navy across the century gathered in HM Naval Base, Portsmouth at the end of September to celebrate 100 years since the Women’s Royal Naval Service commissioned in November 1917, during the First World War.

On Friday 29th September HMS Duncan, the sixth T45 class Air Defence Destroyer hosted an early evening reception for nearly 50 veterans and currently-serving women sailors.

Commander Eleanor Stack RN, HMS Duncan’s Commanding Officer and Captain Bill Oliphant RN, Captain of HM Naval Base, Portsmouth presided over an all-female RN Guard at the evening sunset ceremony, led by Guard Officer Lieutenant Jane Pizii RN. Ten per cent of HMS Duncan’s Ship’s Company are women, including the Logistic Officer, Navigating Officer, Medical Officer, and her most senior Engineering Warrant Officer.

Veterans’ Gateway Update – October 2017

It’s now just over six months since the soft launch, please see below an update on the progress of Veterans’ Gateway and what is coming next for the service.
Veterans’ Gateway so far…

Since the soft launch on 03 April 2017, 1,143 telephone calls have been made to the Veterans’ Gateway helpline which have led to 419 referrals to 19 different partners. There have been 110,000 website sessions (71% of which are new users) with 686 users using the ‘ask a question’ function and 496 live chats taking place.

Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) in collaboration with Centre for Mental Health and King’s Centre for Military Health Research, a part of King’s College London, is issuing a highlight notice under FiMT’s Mental Health Research Programme (MHRP) as part of an initiative to encourage high quality research in the field of veterans’ mental health. The aim of this highlight notice is to encourage applications that propose innovative ways to identify, evaluate and/or propose new methods of improving employment/under-employment in former UK Armed Forces personnel with mental ill-health.

Our two-day Business Start Up Skills course expands on the content from our Self Employment Discovery workshop. This course provides veterans, families, spouses, reservists and cadets from all services, who intend to start up their own businesses, specific training to enable them to launch and sustain it. This course contains a mixture of down to earth, practical advice and essential application tools to start a successful business.
