Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health, is sharing its tops tips to help former servicemen and women cope with the Christmas and New Year period.

Christmas is a time for celebration, yet it can be difficult for veterans with mental health problems. Some may feel isolated, lonely or depressed, while others can feel overwhelmed by large gatherings of family and friends, or feel they don’t have time for themselves.

Wadworth joins forces with the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity to brew Carrier Ale

Wadworth, the Devizes-based family brewer and pub operator, has brewed a collaborative Pale Ale with The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. The beer, which is appropriately named Carrier Ale, celebrates the commissioning of the biggest and most powerful aircraft carrier ever built in Britain, HMS Queen Elizabeth, which will become our flagship aircraft carrier once it is commissioned later this year.

Carrier Ale will be available in exclusive bottles through the Wadworth online shop. For every pint and bottle sold, 5p will be donated to The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity; the principal charity of the Royal Navy which supports sailors, marines and their families for life.

Three Help for Heroes-funded athletes – focus on a journey to the Winter Paralympic Games

Three Help for Heroes-funded athletes – Steve Arnold, Scott Meenagh and Terry Ahrens – are focused on a journey to the Winter Paralympic Games in PyeongChang in March 2018. Help for Heroes has funded the Armed Forces Para Snowsport Team to support the Para Nordic Programme, including supporting three athletes through the elite programme with attendance at the World Cup and World Championship events and building a foundation team for the longer term development of the sport.

17 Veterans Trek 75 Miles Across The Falklands

Between 19th-29th November, 17 veterans and serving personnel trekked 75 miles from Port San Carlos to Port Stanley. Organised by The Not Forgotten Association to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Falklands War, and partly funded by The Royal Marines Charity, the trip was the NFA’s flagship action challenge for 2017. The group consisted of 8 members of SAMA82, all veterans of the Falklands War, a further 7 veterans of various conflicts – including Northern Ireland, Aden, Oman, Iraq and Afghanistan – and 2 injured serving personnel from the Royal Marines and The Household Cavalry.

Three Substantial Grants Are Awarded to the NFA

The NFA were thrilled to receive three substantial grants from LIBOR, ABF The Soldiers Charity and Seafarers UK over the past fortnight. Over the next three years, the Association will receive a total of £294,000 in funding from LIBOR. This, combined with this year’s grants of £65,000 from ABF The Soldiers Charity and £5925 from Seafarers, will contribute hugely towards the work we do over the coming years.

DMWS Training Manager wins MHFA Award

On Wednesday (November 15, 2017) DMWS Training Manager, Mark Perryman, received the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Award as ‘Most Supportive MHFA Friend’. We congratulate Mark on this well-deserved achievement. Over the past four years, Mark has passionately delivered 50 Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses and single-handedly trained over 700 people; which in turn will help thousands of others. Unfortunately he was unable to attend the event to collect his award, as he was delivering an MHFA course – which highlights his commitment to MHFA. Danielle Cowap, DMWS Training Manager collected the award on his behalf.

New Referral Partner for Veterans’ Gateway

DMWS is extremely proud to be Veterans’ Gateway newest referral partner and to be able to do what we do best; to help those who serve and their family during their most critical time of need.

Veterans’ Gateway put veterans and their families in touch with the organisations best placed to help with the information, advice and support they need – from healthcare and housing to employability, finances, personal relationships and more. This new first point of contact, which was launched in June, is the first of its kind, bringing together Military charities and other support organisations under one roof to make finding the right support easier and quicker.

RFEA – The Forces Employment Charity to deliver UNSWIS

RFEA is pleased to announce that, from the beginning of 2018, UNSWIS (Universities in Support of Wounded, Injured and Sick Service Personnel, Veterans, and their Families) will be incorporated within its existing portfolio of programmes to assist wounded, injured and sick (WIS) Service personnel, Veterans and family members make the transition from military life to civilian employment.

UNSWIS was founded at the University of East London in 2012 and currently consists of a network of 50 universities across the UK.

Request for Expression of Interest from Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT)

The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) is requesting Expressions of Interest for ‘The mental health needs of serving and ex-Service personnel: A review of the latest evidence and key stakeholder perspectives’.

FiMT wishes to commission a documented, systematic review of relevant high-quality literature on the current scientific environment and changes and gaps in evidence concerning the field of serving and ex-Service personnel’s (and their families’) mental health.
