One man walks around the world to help the military community

Army Veteran, Dave Mills, has pledged to walk for the next two years for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

Yesterday Army veteran Dave Mills set off on his two-year-long fundraiser, walking around the globe to raise money for SSAFA. On a sunny Monday morning, Sir Andrew Gregory CEO of SSAFA and fellow staff gathered to wave him off from the significant starting place of the Cenotaph in London.

Alabaré welcome new research in to homelessness amongst veterans

Alabaré today welcomes new research commissioned by veterans’ housing charity Stoll and social housing provider Riverside that highlights the problems faced by ex-service personnel upon leaving the Forces.

The research, conducted by the University of York and funded by the Forces in Mind Trust, showed that the veterans who took part in the study experienced a varied quality of advice on transitioning from the Armed Forces and inconsistent support from local housing authorities.

Government urged to make changes to end homelessness among ex-Servicemen and women

New research commissioned by Stoll and Riverside, released today [Tuesday 6th March] at an event at the House of Lords, highlights how some vulnerable ex-Service personnel in crisis are not accessing support services resulting in homelessness after leaving the Armed Forces.

The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) funded research, conducted by York University, found that of participating veterans, many experienced inconsistent quality of advice on transitioning from Service and inadequate support from Local Housing Authorities in the years after leaving service, many of whom did not identify the specialist support available to veterans.

Project Semaphore Update

Project Semaphore, a Royal Naval Association (RNA) initiative, continues to go from strength to strength. Whilst providing iPads for RN and RM Veterans, this is not an IT Project but an initiative that brings people together and builds communities. Mindful that many Veterans have a fear of technology, they feel overwhelmed at the idea of learning new skills, worry about their personal security and need help and support to realise the benefits of the financial savings offered online.

Alabaré welcome new Wiltshire ambassadors

Alabaré are delighted to welcome two new members to our Wiltshire Ambassadors; Gay Edwards and Jennifer Nelson.

Gay has been involved with voluntary work since her late twenties, including a number of charities on the Isle of Wight and in Hampshire, predominately as a trustee. She has also spent many years working on a voluntary basis in prisons, being on the Parole Board for England and Wales and on the Board of Hampshire Probation.

Combat Stress responds to loss of funding from NHS England

Combat Stress’ residential programmes for veterans living with mental health problems are respected around the world. So why is the UK withdrawing £3.2 million in funding from this life saving work?

The recent announcement of our new helpline for those serving in the armed forces is most welcome. So too is NHS England’s investment in specialist mental health community services for veterans. But these services alone are not enough.
