Blindness no issue for golf-playing veteran

A blind veteran from Knott End-On-Sea has been able to reignite his passion for golf thanks to Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Myke Worthington, 55 and originally from Cheshire, was an avid player before his sight began to deteriorate and had all but resigned himself to the possibility that he’d never play again. He says: “I started receiving support from the charity in 2014 and if I’m honest, I didn’t think that playing golf would be something I’d be able to do again. I’ve got Retinitis Pigmentosa and wet macular degeneration and as a result I’m blind in my left eye with only half vision in my right. I’m also colour blind which meant the snooker career had to be put on hold too!”

Soldiering On Awards announces 2017 winners

The 2017 Soldiering On Award winners were announced on Friday 24th March at the Black Tie Dinner and Awards ceremony held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel, London in the presence of the charity’s patron the Rt Hon Earl Howe PC.

550 Guests attended the Awards, hosted by award-winning journalist Angela Rippon and former Royal Marine medic Cassidy Little, the Awards ceremony recognized 46 finalists in 10 categories, naming each category winner.

The evening, opened by Soldiering On CEO Anne Donoghue, commenced with a minute’s silence in remembrance of PC Keith Palmer, formerly of the Royal Artillery, and all those killed and injured on the 22nd April.

Finchale presents cheque to ABF The Soldiers’ Charity

Durham based charity Finchale’s CEO, Mel Pears MBE, presented a cheque for £355.06 to Lieutenant Colonel Barnbrook, Regional Director North East of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, at a ceremony at Finchale’s site in Pity Me on Thursday 23rd March 2017.

Finchale has worked with The Soldiers’ Charity over the past 2 years to provide tailored support to veterans from the North East of England to enable them to move from social exclusion to sustained employment.

Army dependents with learning disabilities supported by The Soldiers’ Charity with grant to HFT

Hft, a charity that provides services for people with learning disabilities throughout England has received financial support from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. The Soldiers’ Charity has been providing assistance to Hft for more than 25 years and the latest grant is for £16,000.

A spokesperson from Hft said about the donation: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive the recent donation towards our work supporting people with learning disabilities, and particularly the close Army dependents living in our services.

Two Marathons, Two Countries, One Week

Two inspiring American and British wounded veterans – Karl Hinett and Ivan Castro – are running the 2017 Boston Marathon on 17 April and the Virgin Money London Marathon on 23 April (that’s two marathons in a week!), side-by-side, in support of The Royal Foundation’s Heads Together campaign. They will be raising funds and awareness of the issue of military mental health for both UK and US veterans with funds raised in the UK going to Contact, a Heads Together Charity Partner and coalition of leading military mental health organisations including Help for Heroes and Walking with the Wounded.

Project to end loneliness for Nottinghamshire Veterans wins national award

Forces Friends, a volunteer-led visiting service created in partnership between The Royal British Legion and Age UK Notts won The Forces in Mind Trust’s (FiMT) ‘Working Together’ Award at the 2017 Soldering on Awards.

The Forces Friends team was handed the prestigious award during a ceremony at the Park Plaza Hotel, Westminster, hosted by Angela Rippon and Cassidy Little, in recognition of their commitment and collaborative approach to supporting the Armed Forces community.

Forces Media Academy – Last call for applications

The closing date for applications to the Forces Media Academy’s unique media course is this Friday 31st March.

The free Higher National Certificate (HNC) Media Production Course is open to service leavers and veterans, and all students on the one-year course also receive a bursary of £18k.

Students learn alongside industry experts and will be taught core modules such as Camera and Lighting Skills, and Film and Video Editing. Specialist modules include Production of Multi-Media Programmes and Advertising Campaigns.
