Homeless Veterans Help Build Their Own Homes

The Forces in Mind Trust has awarded a grant of £70,000 to the Community Self Build Agency (CSBA) to enable them to continue with their work helping veterans who have particularly struggled with housing and employment in the transition to civilian life.

After an initial pilot in Bristol seven years ago, the reach of the project, which aims to help disadvantaged veterans build their own homes and achieve lasting employment, has expanded across the South West and beyond. CSBA works to increase confidence and skills, so that a veteran completing a self-build project leaves with a significantly improved lifestyle and feels a valued part of the community.

The Forces in Mind Trust Sector Briefing Events – York and Nottingham

The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) has held two briefing events, the first in York on Thursday 16th and the second in Nottingham on Friday 17th November, which were attended by over 80 people. Attendees came from a wide range of sectors including the Armed Forces Community and Armed Forces charities as well as other key stakeholders and interested parties who work to support ex-Service personnel and their families.

The events, which were the last in a series of regional briefings in the existing format, were led by Chief Executive of FiMT, Air Vice-Marshal Ray Lock CBE, and supported by his executive team.

Stoll awarded a Silver Award in Employer Recognition Scheme for supporting the Armed Forces

The Ministry of Defence has awarded Stoll a Silver Award in their Employer Recognition Scheme, for being employers who actively support the Armed Forces community in their workplace.

Stoll recently pledged its continued support to Servicemen and women by re-signing the Armed Forces Covenant and recently had the honour of hosting The Chief of Defence People, Lieutenant General Richard Nugee CVO CBE. The Covenant ensures fairness and equal opportunity for service and ex-service personnel, reservists and their families.

Mission Motorsport’s Race of Remembrance

The 4th Race of Remembrance was run by Mission Motorsport over Remembrance weekend at Anglesey Circuit, North Wales. 45 teams took part in the 12hr Endurance Race which included 13 WIS personnel racing, 25 spending the weekend as part of race teams and a further 30 attending to take part in Supercar Saturday where they got fast passenger laps in Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche, Audi and other sports cars.

7th and 19th December – Sing yourself into a festive cheer with local military charity (Colwyn Bay)

Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, is inviting local residents to exercise their vocal chords and enter the festive swing with a number of carol singing sessions at the Bay View centre.

Suzanne Evanson, Blind Veterans UK Regional Fundraising Assistant, says: “We are looking for members of the public to join us on both December 7 and December 19 – you don’t have to be a choir member, or even the world’s best singer! All you need is enthusiasm and a smile!

£2.5 million for Poppy Factory Renovation

The Treasury will be awarding The Poppy Factory £2.5 million to support the renovation of our factory. This funding is being announced by the Chancellor in the budget on Wednesday 22 November 2017.

Chief Executive of The Poppy Factory Deirdre Mills said:

“We are delighted that we can begin the process of transforming our factory into an accessible, inclusive and educational space for the disabled veterans who work here and for the wider local community. Our employment service helps get veterans with mental and physical health conditions back into work and as such helps restore financial independence and make a positive difference to veterans’ lives.”
