Future for Heroes – Veterans’ Foundation Support

Huge thanks to the Veterans’ Foundation for their recent funding support. A fantastic amount to help us with those critical things that allow a charity to operate: funding to cover bespoke training for our volunteers, IT equipment to replace our current holdings that are coal-fired, and PR/merchandising apparatus allowing us to reach out to a wider audience – prospective delegates and like-minded organisations – letting people know what we deliver.

Man from Guildford to compete in 100km challenge for military charity

A man from Guildford is currently training to compete in a 100km walk from London to Brighton for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Chris Garwood, 47, will be attempting the ultra-challenge for the third year in a row. Chris completed 72km in his first year, despite not having trained, but was unfortunately unable to finish due to injuries sustained to his feet. Last year, after saying he would never do it again, he once again found himself at the starting line. He recalls: “Even though I didn’t finish in 2016, I was still incredibly happy with what I’d achieved. 72km is an awfully big distance and not a lot of people can say they’ve walked it in one go!

Funding awarded to research negative transition from the Armed Forces

Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) has awarded £179,848 to Queen’s University Belfast to conduct a three-year, UK-wide study of the experiences of ex-Service personnel who have had an adverse transition back into civilian life.

The research will cover all four nations of the UK, and will look specifically at those who have ended up homeless, in prison or under mental health supervision.

The project aims to build on current knowledge regarding ‘pathways to failure’, and will do this through undertaking qualitative research to include two case studies of voluntary sector support provision, one in Birmingham, the other in Glasgow, as well as conducting interviews with ex-Service personnel, support staff, and with family members of those who have experienced a ‘negative transition’.
